But the twins were too excited to notice the stares, and honestly, I was too focused on Max to care much about gossip. He still seemed perfectly fine, but I found myself watching him for any signs that he might be getting sick again.

We’d barely been seated when I became aware of the buzz of conversation a quiet but weren’t quite succeeding.

“Is that really them?”

“I heard she’s been lying about the kids for years.‘

“My cousin was at that fashion show. She said it was a complete disaster.”

My stomach started to churn. I’d known this would happen eventually–after the drama at the charity event, everyone in the territories would know that Max and Jane were Andrei’s children, not Damon’s. The carefully constructed cover that had protected us for five years was completely blown.

“Daddy, can I get chocolate chip pancakes?” Jane asked, oblivious as ever.

“You can get whatever you want, sweetheart,” Andrei said, but I could see the tension in his shoulders. He’d noticed the stares too.

More murmurs reached our table as we waited for our food.

“So are she and Damon getting divorced now?”

“What about that woman who was with Andrei? The one who caused the scene?”

“I always thought those kids looked more like him anyway.

For the first time in years, I found myself not wanting to silence the rumors. Part of me–a bigger part than I wanted to admit–liked the idea of people seeing us as a family. Of not having to pretend anymore that Andrei was just a friend or ally.

But the attention was also overwhelming. Every conversation seemed to stop when we walked by. Every glance felt loaded with judgment or speculation.

“Excuse me,” a middle–aged woman approached our table just as our food arrived. “I’m sorry to bother you, but I was at the charity event the other night. I just wanted to say how sorry I am about what happened.”

She paused, and I braced myself for what was sure to come next,

“But I have to ask–are you and Alpha Damon getting divorced? And what about Alpha Andrei’s… situation?”

My face burned with embarrassment. But before I could figure out how to respond, Andrei set down his coffee cup and looked directly at the woman.

“Lilith and I are not together,” he said calmly. “We haven’t been for some time. As for the rest of it…” He glanced at me, then at the twins, who were focused on cutting their pancakes. “We’re all just trying to figure out what’s best for the children. It’s complicated, and we’d appreciate the space to navigate it in our own way.”

The woman’s expression immediately softened. “Oh. Of course. I’m sorry for prying. It’s just… well, it’s obvious how much you care about them. About all of them.”
