Chapter 221
“This is where you’ll be staying,” he said, opening the door.
I stepped inside and immediately felt like I had stepped back in time. Evening was exactly as I’d left it—the pale blue walls, the vanity, even the books on the shelf beside the bed
I spent here in the early days of
As I ran my hand along the plush comforter, I couldn’t help but recalli our marriage, before we shared a room. Of course, Andrei had always pined for Lilith throughout our marriage- so it seemed.
So when I first moved into the pack house, I had my own suite. We only started sharing one sparingly when we finally consummated our marriage–and consequently conceived the twins.
The twins‘ room was right across the hall, already set up with two small beds and decorations that suited each of the children. I turned slowly, in awe of the space. Someone had even painted flowers and fairies next to Jane’s bed, and next to Max’s bed was a decal of a dinosaur looking up at a flaming comet.
“How did you…?”
“Mila owed me a favor,” Andrei said, placing his arm around my shoulders as the twins explored their new space. “I had her do some last–minute decorating last night.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Last–minute? It looks like you went all out.”
The tips of Andrei’s ears turned slightly pink as he admitted, “I may or may not have been planning this for weeks now. Figured it would be nice for the twins to have their own space if you ever wanted to come back.”
“Awfully presumptuous of you,” I teased. But the fact that Andrei had lovingly prepared a room for the twins in advance made my stomach do a little flip.
Suddenly, I heard a floorboard creak behind me. I whipped my head around just in time to see a head of brown hair appear around the corner. My heart pounded.
Lilith.
But it wasn’t her. It was a random pack member who I didn’t recognize!
Andrei followed my gaze and, as if reading my mind, whispered, “Don’t worry about Lilith. She’s being held in the old servants‘ quarters on the other side of the building. I demoted her to Omega. She can’t hurt you anymore.”
I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. Omega. The Alpha’s demotion would weaken her wolf, make her virtually incapable of harming me due to our differences in status. And if she misbehaved, Andrei would know about it through the pack bond.
“Good.”
Just then, a middle–aged woman with graying hair stepped into the doorway. She was wearing a pristine gray nurse’s uniform.
“Ah! This is Elena,” Andrei said, turning and gesturing to her. “She’s our new head nurse here at Moonshadow. She’ll be helping take care of Max while you’re staying with us.”
Elena smiled warmly at the twins. “I hear someone’s been feeling under the weather.”
Max nodded shyly. “My chest hurts sometimes.”
“Well, we’ll get that sorted out,” Elena said gently. “I’ve been taking care of sick little wolves for twenty years.

After Elena examined Max and declared that he was stable but definitely needed rest and monitoring, Andrei suggested we all get settled before dinner.
“Take your time,” he said. “Dinner’s at six, but don’t feel like you
I spent the next hour unpacking our bags and trying to adjust to being back in my old room. Everything felt familiar yet strange, like putting on clothes that were just a half–size too small.
The twins were less bothered by the change. They spent the time exploring every corner of their new room, exclaiming over the view from their window and the fact that they each had their own closet.
When six o’clock came, we made our way downstairs to the dining room. The table was set for four, and Andrei was already waiting for us.
Dinner was delicious–roasted chicken with vegetables and fresh bread that was still warm from the oven. Andrei kept up a steady stream of conversation, asking the twins about their favorite subjects in school and telling them stories about Moonshadow pack traditions.
But I couldn’t help but notice that Max barely touched his food. He pushed the chicken around his plate and took a few bites of bread, but that was it. Usually he had quite the appetite, especially since his wolf emerged, but tonight he just sat quietly and occasionally coughed.
“You okay, buddy?” I asked, reaching over to feel his forehead. He was warm, but not feverish.
“Just tired,” he mumbled.
I shot a wary glance at Andrei as my chest tightened with worry. I was just about to suggest that we put Max to bed early when Andrei suddenly stood and said, “How about a board game?”
My eyebrows lifted, but it was too late. Max and Jane were already jumping up in excitement.
