She didn’t tear her gaze away. Just mumbled something that I couldn’t make out.
With a soft sigh, I pulled another chair close to hers and sat down. Max looked so small in the infirmary bed, his dark hair messy against the white pillowcase. Despite his state of unconsciousnes occasionally jolt beneath the covers as if he were trying desperately to draw in a

“He’s going to be fine,” I said after several long minutes of complete and utter silence. “Max is strong. He’s got good genes.”
Natalia looked wholly unconvinced. “He’s too young to be dealing with this.”
“Kids are tougher than we think.”
“I can tell when my own son is in trouble.”
I stayed quiet for a long while after that. I didn’t want to worry Natalia further, but she was right. Even my own wolf could sense that Max was weak and that he was only getting worse by the day.
When Elena came to check on him an hour later, I followed her out into the hallway.
“I need you to run some additional tests,” I said quietly. “Blood work, chest X–rays, whatever you think might help.”
Elena nodded grimly. “I was thinking the same thing. This isn’t progressing like typical pneumonia should. I’ll have the results by morning.”
“Don’t tell Natalia about the tests yet,” I added. “She’s scared enough as it is.”
“Of course.”
When I returned to the infirmary, Natalia was still in the same position, watching Max sleep. I knew there was no way she was leaving his side tonight, which meant that I wasn’t leaving either.
“Elena,” I called softly. “Can you have someone bring up two cots? We’re staying here tonight.”
“Andrei, you don’t have to-” Natalia started, but I cut her off with a raised hand.
“Yes, I do,” I said firmly. “You’re not leaving Max, and I’m not leaving either of you.”
Twenty minutes later, two narrow cots had been set up beside Max’s bed. They weren’t the most comfortable sleeping arrangements, but they would work. Natalia reluctantly agreed to lie down when I pointed out that she needed to rest in order to take care of Max.
“Try to get some sleep,” I said as I settled onto my own cot beside hers. “I’ll keep an eye on him.”
“I don’t think I can sleep.”
“Just try.”
”
Surprisingly, Natalia nodded and shut her eyes. For a little while, the infirmary was quiet except for the soft sounds of crickets outside and Max’s occasional whimper or cough. I laid on my back, staring at the ceiling and trying not to think about all the things that could be wrong with my son.
Pneumonia was serious enough, but what if it was something worse after all, just like my wolf suspected? What if the water from the lake had caused permanent damage to his lungs?
