A breath of relief escaped me.

He was still sleeping and definitely unwell, but he seemed to have improved somewhat overnight. His face had a little more color, and he wasn’t wheezing so much anymore. Despite the occasional little hiccup or cough, he seemed to be able to draw in more air with each breath.

Grace had been right. Having his biological father close by was helping Max heal.

I turned my head to look at Andrei, who was still asleep on the cot beside mine. Judging from the dark pools under his eyes, he hadn’t slept much all night.

Careful not to wake him or Max, I stood and stretched, realizing I was still wearing the same clothes as last night.

I left them there to rest and tiptoed out of the room. After changing into something fresh and combing my snarled hair, I made my way down to the kitchen with the intention of preparing something delicious to cheer everyone

  1. up.

The kitchen was quiet when I reached it, early morning sunlight streaming through the tall windows. I’d cooked in this kitchen before, during our marriage, although it had never felt comfortable then. Everything had been so tense between Andrei and I, so careful and polite.

We were only good in bed together during those days. He wasn’t the same man he was now, and admittedly, I wasn’t the same woman. Despite having nights of passion, we rarely ate togetherand I often loathed cooking for him because I knew he didn’t really want to dine with me.

Now, as I opened the refrigerator and started pulling out ingredients for breakfast, it felt different. Like I belonged here again.

I was whisking eggs in a large bowl when I heard footsteps behind me. Expecting to see one of the pack members starting their morning duties, I turned with a smile.

But the smile died on my face.

Lilith was standing in the doorway wearing a simple gray uniform that marked her as an Omega servant. Her hair was pulled back severely, and there were dark circles under her eyes. She looked smaller somehow, diminished by her demotion.

I didn’t say anything. Didn’t warn her or threaten her or give her a chance to speak.

I just walked across the kitchen and slapped her as hard as I could.

The sound echoed through the room like a gunshot. Lilith stumbled backward, her hand flying to her cheek, and crashed into a rack of pots and pans. Metal clattered to the floor as she fell, the sound echoing through the quiet house.

My chest heaved as I stood over her, my hand stinging from the impact. She was sitting on the ground now, holding her face and looking up at me with shock and fear.

Good, I thought bitterly. She should be afraid.
