Chapter 233

Natalia

Andrei and I immediately jumped into action, forgetting our brief tryst. He grabbed his knife from beside the sleeping bag while I reached for the silvertipped blade I’d tucked under my pillow.

We crept to the tent opening, and Andrei listened for a few moments before he held up three fingers, then pointed in different directions around our camp. Three rogues, maybe more.

The first rogue was crouched near the dying campfire, probably trying to figure out how many of us there were. Andrei gestured for me to take him while he circled around to the other side of camp.

I slipped out of the tent and moved through the shadows, my bare feet silent on the pine needles. The rogue was so focused on the fire that he didn’t hear me coming until my blade was already sliding between his ribs. He dropped without a sound.

A grunt from across camp told me Andrei had found his target. But before I could feel any relief, branches crashed somewhere behind me. More footsteps. A lot more.

Damon!I hissed, and within seconds he was beside me with a wickedlooking hunting knife in each hand.

How many?

Too fucking many,Andrei growled, appearing at my other side. His shirt was torn and there was blood on his knuckles, but he seemed uninjured.

The rogues weren’t trying to be quiet anymore. They moved through the trees like a pack, circling us, their yellow eyes reflecting the dying firelight. I counted at least eight, maybe ten. All of them looked feral and half- starved, the way rogues did when they’d been living in the wilderness too long.

One of them, a woman with matted hair and scars covering her arms, stepped into the clearing. Well, well. Look what we have here. Fresh meat, wandering into our territory.

We’re just passing through,Damon said, positioning himself so the three of us formed a triangle with our backs to the tent where Grace was huddling with Max.

The woman laughed, her voice like metal being raked over hot coals. Nobody passes through the Thornwood. Nobody leaves the Thornwood.

And then they attacked.

The rogues moved like a wave, coming at us from all sides. I ducked under the claws of a massive male and drove my blade up into his chest, but before I could pull it free, another one was on me. This one was faster, younger, and his claws raked across my shoulder before I could dodge.

Andrei appeared beside me, his knife finding the rogue’s throat before the bastard could strike again. Stay close to me!

But there were too many of them. For every one we dropped, two more seemed to take their place. Damon was holding his own, spinning and slashing with both knives, but even he was starting to show signs of fatigue. Suddenly, a highpitched snarl made my blood freeze. Grace’s scream cut through the night air from the

Grace!” I tried to push through the fighting, but a rogue blocked my path. This one was different from the otherscleaner, more controlled. His eyes held an intelligence that the feral ones lacked.

The child,he said, tilting his head toward Max’s tent. “He smellsinteresting.

Pure rage exploded through my chest. My wolf surged forward, and I felt my claws extend. You stay away from my son.
