I tackled the rogue from behind, driving him away from my son. We rolled across the ground, his claws searching for my throat while I tried to keep my knife between us. He was stronger than me, and with only one good arm, I was losing.
“Natalia!”
Andrei’s desperate shout came from somewhere behind me, but I couldn’t turn to look. The rogue’s claws were getting closer to my face, and my strength was fading fast.
That was when the howls started. A haunting harmony of different pitches coming from deep within the forest.
The rogue on top of me froze, his head snapping toward the sound. Before either of us could react, something massive crashed through the trees and knocked him off of me.
Wolves. At least a dozen of them. They were huge, their fur marked with strange silver patterns that seemed to glow in the firelight.
They tore through the rogues like they were made of paper. Within minutes, the clearing was silent except for our ragged breathing and the low growls of the newcomers.
I scrambled back to Max’s side, pulling him against me protectively. Grace huddled beside us, her eyes bulging out of her head with terror. Across the clearing, Andrei and Damon had their backs pressed together, weapons
raised.
But if we thought we were outnumbered before, that was nothing compared to now. Now, we were completely surrounded–and in the darkness beyond the clearing, I could see pale silver eyes blinking at us.
There had to have been at least thirty.
The largest of the wolves, a silver–furred male the size of a small horse, shifted back into human form. He was tall and lean, wearing dark clothing and a mask that covered the lower half of his face.
“More rogues,” he said to his companions. “It’s best to put them out of their misery.”
“No,” I said quickly, holding Max tighter. “We’re not rogues. We’re from Ashmoor and Moonshadow packs. We have identification-”
One of the other wolves stepped forward, raising what looked like a crossbow. “Rogues always lie.”
“Wait.” A younger voice spoke from the edge of the group. A woman, also masked, moved closer to us. Her eyes widened when she saw Max in my arms. “There’s a child. A sick child.”
The leader held up a hand, stopping the others from advancing. “Rogues don’t travel with dying pups.‘
“He’s not dying,” I said fiercely, which was a fucking lie,

The woman approached slowly, her nostrils flaring as she scented Max. For a long moment, no one moved. I hardly even dared to breathe. Finally, she pulled her head back and stormed over to the male, whispering something in his ear that I couldn’t make out.
Tilting his head, the male studied us for a long time.

Then, he strode over to me and grabbed my ponytail.
“Natalia!” Andrei and Damon shouted in unison, surging toward me–only to be quickly blocked off and disarmed by four wolves, crossbows pointed directly at their heads.
My eyes widened as the male gripped my ponytail tight, completely unfazed by Grace’s screams and hits. I held still, perfectly still, as I stared up into those eyes.
