“How is he?” I asked.

“Better,” the head healer, a woman whose face was partially obscured by a cream–colored hood, assured me.” The healing is working, but slowly. It will take several more days, maybe a week.”

A week. I’d expected a day or two at most.

“He needs to remain here for the duration,” the healer continued. “Moving him now could be dangerous.”

Alexander appeared beside me. “Which means you’ll be staying as well. Perfect opportunity to get reacquainted with your family.”

I nodded. Of course I would stay for as long as I had to. That was never a question. And seeing Max’s little chest rising and falling more steadily, seeing some color returning to his pallid skin… It made it worth it.

“They want you to stay.” Andrei pressed an open–mouthed kiss along my bare collarbone, then another across my shoulder. I stretched languidly under his touch, the sheets bunched around our hips.

“Just until Max is better,” I whispered.

Green eyes flicked up to me. “You heard your father. He wants you to stay permanently.”

I sighed and shut my eyes briefly. “They’ve been without me for nearly thirty years. Of course they want me close.”

“And what do you want?”

“I want Max to get better. Everything else can wait.”

Andrei was silent for several long moments. His fingers traced patterns along my bare breasts and waist, making me shiver. But despite the tenderness of our post–coital glow, there was a hardness in his eyes that gave away his true feelings.

“Say it,” I muttered.

He pursed his lips. “Fine. I don’t trust this situation.”

“What’s not to trust? They’re my family.”

“They’re strangers who happen to share your blood. And they’re already trying to separate you from everyone you care about.”

I cupped his face in my hands. “No one’s separating me from anyone. I’m here for Max, that’s all.”

“What if it’s not that simple? What if they try to make you choose?”

“Then I’ll choose what’s best for my children. Always.”

Andrei studied my face for a long moment. “I hope what’s best for them is us staying together.”

I grinned and swung one leg over him, moving so I was straddling him. My hair fell around us in a curtain, blocking out the rest of the world as I leaned down to lock my mouth with his. Our tongues swirled together, the taste of him making fresh heat coil low in my belly.

“What do you think?” I whispered, sliding down further to feel his desire pressing against my thighs, bare and hot and already throbbing with need.

Andrei let out a low, soft groan as I began working my way down. His skin was smooth and warm, like butter under my lips, and as I moved further south, my thighs clenched together with want. But just as I was about to graze the tip of his manhood with my tongue, he stiffened.

“What is it?” I asked, lifting my head.

Andrei’s eyes were glazed over, the way they got when he was receiving a mindlink. His jaw tightened as he listened.

“There’s been an incident in Moonshadow,” he finally said with a huff. “A rogue breach in the eastern border. Some people were seriously injured, a few even killed. I’ll have to return as soon as possible.”

I sat up, my desire immediately forgotten. “You heard what they said. Max won’t be ready for at least another few days, if not longer.”

“I know.” The conflict was clear on his face. “I don’t want to leave either of you. I could send Damon back in my

stead-”

“No.” I shook my head and sat back on my heels. “If either of you is going to travel back through the Thornwood, you should go together. It’s dangerous, and you fight best together. Besides, if there’s a breach in Moonshadow, Ashmoor could be at risk as well.”

Andrei opened his mouth to argue, but even he couldn’t seem to come up with anything, and snapped it shut again. He nodded. “You’re right. We’ll travel quickly and return as soon as possible.” He laced his fingers with mine. “If that’s alright with you, of course.”

Of course it wasn’t. Being left alone deep within a dangerous rogue–infested forest with people I barely knew and a son who was still sick didn’t exactly fill me with joy.

But deep down, I knew I was safe here. Even if the rest of the Thornwood was dangerous, Bloodmoon was secure, and my father and brother–Goddess, it still felt so strange saying that–clearly only wanted the best for

Finally, I managed a small smile. “It’s alright with me. Just make sure you get there and back safely.”

Andrei’s eyes flickered with uncertainty, but he looped his arm around my waist and drew me closer again, then flipped us so his large body was now caging me against the mattress,

“Just in case I never see you again,” he teased, eliciting a groan from me that was equal parts pleasure and exasperation as he settled himself between my thighs, “let’s have one last good night.”
