Chapter 240

Natalia

The next morning, I woke up before Andrei. He had a long day ahead of him, so I decided to let him sleep and check on Max while he was resting. The compound was quieter in the early hours, with most pack members still sleeping or just beginning their day.

Max was doing much better already, although the healers only let me catch a glimpse. Those strange stones were glowing more brightly, and one healer was waving some kind of smoking bundle of herbs over his small body. I only got to watch from afar, but seeing him breathing more easily soothed my nerves.

I was heading back from the healing chambers when I ran into Karl coming out of what looked like a library, carrying a stack of books under his arm.

Oh! Natalia. Good morning.” He seemed a little out of breath, his glasses slipping down his nose. How’s your son doing?

Better. The healers say the process is working.I glanced at the books he was carrying. You’re up early.

Karl shrugged and fell into step beside me as we continued down the corridor. I like the quiet hours for reading. Less interruption. He shifted the books to one arm. Mind if I ask you something?

Sure.

What’s it like out there? Beyond the Thornwood, I mean. I’ve never left Bloodmoon territory.

Never left? That seemed odd for someone his age, but I supposed if you’d grown up in an isolated pack, maybe it wasn’t that unusual.

It’s different,I said, glancing at him as we walked. More crowded. More complicated in some ways, simpler in others.

Are there really cities with thousands of people all living together?

I nodded. Millions, in some places.

Karl’s eyes widened, and his steps faltered briefly before he jogged to catch back up with me. That’s hard to imagine. And you lived in one?

Not a city, no.I couldn’t help but smile. I much prefer the quietude of the countryside. Ashmoor in particular is really quaint and peaceful.

Ah, I see. That’s fascinating. Is Ashmoor known for anything in particular? Any specific trades?

Wine, mostly. The way he was looking at me was like a kid in a classroom. It was honestly kind of adorable. What about you? Don’t you ever want to see what else is out there?

His shoulders sagged. “Sometimes. But Celeste isn’t interested in leaving, and her family is here.He paused. She says the outside world is dangerous. Full of rogues and people who would hurt us if they knew what we

were.

That was probably true, considering what had happened to Bloodmoon in the past. Still, it seemed like a limited

way to live.

There are good people too,I said. And bad things happen everywhere. Even in safe places.

Karl opened his mouth to ask another question, but footsteps rapidly echoed down the corridor, causing us to stop and turn to see who it was. Celeste appeared from around the corner a moment later, and her face went as cold as ice when she saw the scene.

There you are,she said to Karl, completely ignoring me. Before he could respond, she grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him into a kiss that was way more intimate than anything I wanted to witness in a hallway at seven in the morning.
