“Ready to go?” I shut the door behind me and leaned against the wood.

“Unfortunately.” He zipped the bag and turned to face me. “You sure you’ll be okay here?”

“I’ll be fine. It’s only for a few days, right?” I moved across the room to sit on the edge of the bed. “Actually, I wanted to ask you something. When you come back, could you bring Jane with you?”

Andrei raised an eyebrow. “You want her traveling through the Thornwood?”

“I know it’s dangerous, but I think she’d like to meet her grandfather and uncle. And I miss her.” My voice was smaller than I would have liked, but my words were genuine. “I’m sure my father would send an escort to make sure you come back safely.”

Andrei’s brows lifted as if he didn’t fully believe that Alexander would actually care whether he made it back safely, but he nodded. “If that’s what you want.”

“It is.”

Andrei nodded. “I’ll talk to Damon about it. Jane will probably want to see Max, anyway.”

I smiled at that. Max would likely be thrilled to see his sister when–when–he woke up.

Once Andrei was ready, we made our way to the compound entrance where Damon and Grace were waiting with their own packed bags. Alexander and David were there too, along with several Bloodmoon warriors who would escort them through the forest.

“The rogue activity has been escalating,” Alexander told Andrei. “Our scouts report increased movement throughout the Thornwood. The pack grounds are secure, but the forest itself is more dangerous than usual.”

“We’ll be careful,” Andrei assured him.

Alexander nodded, then turned to me. “You’re staying, I take it?”

I nodded. “I’m staying. Max needs me here.”

My father looked relieved. “Very well.” He turned and hesitated briefly before clasping Andrei’s shoulder. Travel safely. And know that your mate will be well cared for in your absence.”

Andrei’s jaw tightened slightly at the formal way Alexander said ‘mate,‘ but he just nodded.

Grace hugged me goodbye, promising to check on Jane and give her my love. Damon squeezed my hand and told me to stay out of trouble, which earned him an eye roll.

Finally, it was time for Andrei to go. He pulled me aside, away from the others.

“Last chance to change your mind,” he said quietly.

“I’m not changing my mind.”

“Even if your family tries to convince you to stay permanently?”

I looked up at him. “Even then. My life is with you and the twins. That hasn’t changed just because I found my

The seriousness in his voice made me nod. “I promise.”

He kissed me then, soft and lingering, and I found myself memorizing the feel of his lips, the warmth of his hands on my face. When he pulled back, there was something in his green eyes that looked almost like goodbye.
