Somehow, we managed to get out of that blasted Thornwood with our hides intact, although it wasn’t easy. It took twice as long as I expected to navigate the dark, misty forest, and the constant rogue threats weren’t any help.

By the time we left the woods, agreeing to meet the escorts back here again in three days‘ time–I refused to leave Natalia and Max for longer than that, and even that was pushing it–I was exhausted. But we still had a long day ahead of us, between getting back to Moonshadow and dealing with the eastern border.

“You’re thinking about her,” Damon oh–so–wisely noted as we packed our things and made our way to the waiting car.

“How very observant of you.” I flashed my brother a sidelong look, but there was little heat in it. “It doesn’t exactly fill me with joy to leave her behind in that place.”

“Bloodmoon is well–protected,” Damon pointed out. “You saw how those warriors fight like demons. The rogues from the Thornwood won’t be able to get inside the compound, and if they somehow do, they’ll be dispatched long before they reach her or Max.‘

Indeed–the Bloodmoon escort that had taken us through the forest was incredibly skilled, utilizing fighting techniques that shouldn’t have even existed anymore. But then again, their entire pack shouldn’t have existed anymore, either.

But the rogues weren’t the only threat on my mind. Far from it, in fact.

“It’s not just the Thornwood I’m worried about.” I gave Damon a meaningful look.

Damon’s jaw ticked. “Andrei, she finally found her family after all these years. Why can’t you just be happy for her?”

“Of course I’m happy for her,” I ground out. And, Goddess, I really was. Not just for Max’s sake, but for hers, too. I never expected to find a cure for Max and Natalia’s long–lost family in one fell swoop. It felt like a miracle. “I just don’t like the way they’re clearly trying to convince her to stay there.”

“Without you.” Damon tilted his head.

I turned to Damon. “So you noticed, too. Her father and brother don’t like me.”

“I think they’re wary and protective,” Damon allowed, clearly choosing his words carefully. “They thought their last surviving family member was missing for nearly thirty years. Now she’s back, with two kids and an unmarked mate and a sadness in her eyes that won’t go away.”

“A sadness I blame myself for every second of every fucking day,” I growled.

Damon sighed. “Yes, but a sadness nonetheless.” He clapped his hand on my shoulder and gave it a squeeze. They’ll warm up to you. You’re just… an acquired taste, that’s all.”

Despite everything, I had to snort at that. “An acquired taste.”

My brother grinned and swung the car door open. “Yes. Like a very moldy cheese.”
