Chapter 252
My words seemed to have struck a chord, because Lilith whipped her head around, wild eyes burning into me with an intensity that made my wolf’s hackles raise, She opened her mouth once, twice, three times. Then closed it a final time and seemed to hold herself back from saying something
“If you know anything, Lilith, you should tell me. It won’t make up for what you did to those children, not by a long shot, but it’s the least you could do. We need to be prepared if there are more rogues organizing an attack.*
Lilith stared at me for a moment longer, and for the briefest second, I thought she might tell me. Something, Anything.
But then her shoulders dipped and she turned back toward the wall, where she continued scratching at the
stone.
I left her there after that, although I quietly told the guard to move her to a nicer cell and give her a hot bath. Not because I thought she deserved it by any stretch of the imagination, but because I could tell that she wasn’t telling me something.
And if there was one thing I knew for certain about Lilith, it was that she always wanted to look beautiful. Perhaps a hot bath and combing the knots out of her hair would loosen her tongue.
When I made my way back to the main house, I found Jane sitting by herself in the parlor, swinging her legs in the large armchair by the window. She had a picture book open on her lap, but she wasn’t reading it. Rather, she was looking wistfully outside with a faraway expression on her face.
“Whatcha thinking about, sweetie?” I asked, ruffling her hair as I passed.
Jane sighed. “I miss Max.”
My heart sank. “I miss him too. But we’ll see him soon.”
“Promise?”
Even though it made me uneasy to take Jane to the Thornwood, I nodded. I knew the Bloodmoon warriors would ensure her safe arrival in their compound, and even if they weren’t there, I couldn’t bring myself to say no to that face. Jane had been missing her brother sorely for days now and it was breaking my heart.
“Promise,” I said. I moved over to her and dropped to a crouch, taking her small hands in mine. She sniffled, and up close now, I could tell that she’d been crying.
I managed a small smile. “Max is probably awake right now, you know.”
Her face lit up a little at that. “You really think so?”
“I know so. You should have seen the healers; they had all these cool, glowing crystals, and they blew smoke in Max’s face that smelled really funny. But they were all extremely smart too, and they weren’t even worried when they took Max in.”
Jane grinned. “I want to meet them.”
“You will,” I said, then bit my lip, thinking about who else was waiting for her there. “You’ll get to meet your grandpa and uncle for the first time, too.”

“But… Uncle Damon is my uncle.”
“Uncle Damon is my brother,” I clarified. “This uncle is your mom’s brother.”
“Oh.” Jane wrinkled her nose. “Is he nice?”
I hesitated again. Was David nice? I couldn’t exactly tell, because it was so obvious he and Alexander both didn’t like me. But if Natalia liked him… I nodded. “Yes. He’s nice.”
“That’s good.” Jane let out a sigh of relief, then asked, “Daddy, can we make something to bring for Max? I want to cheer him up.”
“Sure, sweetheart.” Glad for the distraction, I stood and walked over to the parlor closet, where we kept the games and toys. I found a basket of arts and crafts supplies and set up a card–making station on the floor.
Soon, Jane and I were laughing over glitter and colorful construction paper. And although half of our little family was missing, for a few minutes, everything felt perfect.
