Chapter 258
“Celeste,” I said, stopping in front of her and deciding to cut straight to the chase, “I wanted to apologize. I’m sure Karl told you by now
“Right. The kiss,” Celeste looked up at me, and I was taken aback when I didn’t see a look of contempt on her face, but rather a… smile? “It’s alright. I understand you weren’t yourself.”
“You do?” I took a step back in surprise, I had expected her to yell at me, maybe even throttle me. But not understand me. Maybe she was hiding a dagger under her long skirts or something.
She shrugged. “It doesn’t exactly fill me with joy to find out that you kissed my betrothed. But he explained everything, and it’s clear to me that you were thinking of your lover when it happened, not mine.”
I loosed a breath of relief, thankful that she was being understanding about all of this. Maybe Celeste had a change of heart after what happened; maybe we didn’t have to feud after all.
“Thank you for understanding,” I said. “I hope this doesn’t cause any bad blood between us; what I said last night still stands.”
“Of course.” Celeste stood, smoothing down her skirt. No knife. That was good. “Just… Don’t let it happen again.”
“I won’t.” And I intended to keep that promise. Getting drugged once in a lifetime was bad enough, but twice? I really needed to stop accepting drinks from strangers.
Celeste looked pleased, and with that, I left her alone. Still, her serene smile still fixed on me when I glanced over my shoulder was a little unsettling. But I chalked it up to our brief but tense history and tried not to let it get
to me.
The following morning, Andrei was supposed to return with Jane. I popped out of bed right away, hardly having even slept the night before–partially out of fear of another attack but mostly out of excitement to see my mate and daughter again.
I found out that Max was well enough to move around a bit, which elated me beyond all belief. The healers had prepared a small wooden wheelchair for him, and he was thrilled to be pushed around.
As I pushed him toward the compound entrance to meet Andrei and Jane, he made racecar noises and pretended to be holding a steering wheel while his little legs wiggled beneath his blanket. I couldn’t help but laugh.
Max’s face was still pale, eyes still sunken and cheeks still gaunt, but he was returning to his old self. I couldn’t even put into words how happy I was; against all odds, my little family was coming back together. Slowly but surely.
Andrei and Jane arrived just on time, flanked by the pack of Bloodmoon warriors that had escorted them through the Thornwood. The moment I saw Jane walk into the compound, held in Andrei’s arms, I nearly collapsed. They made it safely, thank the Goddess.
Andrei put Jane down and she came barreling straight toward her brother.
“Max!” Jane cried, throwing her arms around her twin. “Max, I missed you so much! Daddy and I made you a card, and I brought your favorite stuffie!”
