Chapter 259

Andrei and I had dinner privately that night. Since we were all together again, and Max was well enough to sit at the table with us, my father and brother didn’t protest when I told them we wanted to be alone.
We shared a small but delicious meal in my private chambers, watching as Jane continued to chatter away to Max about everything he had missed. Meanwhile, Max picked at his soup.
He couldn’t have solid foods yet, which was a struggle for a six–year–old who wanted to eat pasta and chicken, but he stopped fussing when we promised to have a smorgasbord when we returned to the territories.
After dinner, while Max and Jane played quietly by the fireplace with some toys and books Andrei had brought, Andrei and I sat on the sofa with glasses of wine and watched.
“Jane really missed her brother,” Andrei mentioned as we watched Jane try to teach Max this new way of stacking blocks that she’d figured out. “She was really listless these past few days.”
The thought made my chest ache. The twins had never spent so much time apart before. Maybe it was good for them as they got older to learn to live separately from time to time, but it didn’t make it any easier.
“She would have liked it here. I can’t wait to show her around the compound tomorrow.”
Andrei shot me a sidelong glance. “I can tell from the flush on your cheeks that you’ve grown to like it here, too.”
“That’s just the wine,” I lied, although I couldn’t help but smile. “It’s a fascinating place. A city basically built into the inside of a mountain, thriving despite the conditions of the forest around us…”
“I’ll give it that. It is impressive.” Andrei turned to face me fully.
I smiled and leaned my head back on the couch, looking at him. “David is teaching me the traditional Bloodmoon fighting style.”
“Oh?” Andrei’s dark brows arched, and something devilishly wicked flickered across his gaze. “They’re not turning you into a little assassin, are they?”
I snorted into my wine cup and swatted at him. “You know I can’t be quiet if I tried.”
“We’ll have to put that to the test later.”
My cheeks flushed even more, although it had nothing to do with the wine or my newfound love for this strange pack this time.
“I do still want to go home, though,” I said, almost more to myself than to Andrei. “I don’t love it here as much as I love it there.”
“Moonshadow or Ashmoor?” Andrei asked.
“Both.” The two packs felt more and more like one these days. I couldn’t imagine a life without either of them.” But mostly wherever you and the twins are.” I sighed wistfully. “Once Max is well enough to not need the healers anymore, we’ll go home with you.”
Andrei’s eyes softened, and he leaned close to press a gentle kiss to my lips. It was soft and full of unspoken

words, and I found myself leaning into him, yearning to taste more.
But with the deliciousness of the kiss came another, more bitter taste. I’d kissed Karl. Another man. I had been under the influence of a drug and hallucinating that it was Andrei, but… still.
Andrei, noticing my sudden tension, leaned back and furrowed his brow. “What’s wrong?
Talmost told him. But just as I parted my lips to do so, I shut them again and shook my head. I would tell him eventually, but not right now. I didn’t want to shatter this precious moment with tales of an attempt on my life and kissing a man I hardly even knew.
“Nothing,” I said. Then, changing the subject, I added, “What did I miss in Moonshadow? Tell me about the border.”
