Chapter 265
Lopened my mouth to respond, but before i could, the gruff voice of my father’s Beta interrupted us. “Alpha Andrei, Luma Natalia. Alpha Alexander wishes to speak with you both.”
stuttered as I feared that the situation with Karl and Celeste was about to reach a head before Andrei and I could even work things out between us, but we both nodded and followed the Beta down the corridor.
A few minutes later, we stepped into Alexander’s study–a circular chamber with a round table dominating the center. The curved windows looked out over the inner plaza below, where I could see the market still bustling with people.
My father and David were both sitting at the round table, surrounded by maps and other documents. There were several other people with them, both men and women I didn’t recognize. Celeste and Karl weren’t among them, and judging from the din, I doubted this had anything to do with aphrodisiacs and kisses.
Everyone seemed to be talking at once. Some were arguing, others were murmuring amongst themselves. My father was pointing at the map while David twirled his knife on the tabletop and barked something back at him, gouging the wood with the tip of the blade.
“Natalia, Andrei.” My father lifted his hand, silencing the room in an instant. Even David went silent. “I was hoping you would come. I have a proposition for you.”
“What is it?” I asked.
My father gestured to the large map. In one area, north of Bloodmoon territory and still within the Thornwood, was a cluster of pieces in the shape of wolves.
“My scouts just informed me that there’s a rather large pack of rogues headed our way from the north,” he explained. “Thirty of them, at least. We should be able to dispatch them quickly with our warriors, but I was wondering if you two might consider accompanying the troop.”
My eyebrows shot up at that. When I glanced at Andrei, he was frowning, his arms folded across his chest.
“Why us?” he asked.
“I heard the details of your border breach in the territories. If you’re interested in learning more about the rogues‘ movements, this might be a good opportunity for that.” My father glanced at me. “Furthermore, Natalia, David tells me you’ve been improving at combat immensely just over the past few days. Given the fact that we believe your special ability might be combat–based, we figured…”
“You want to see how useful of a weapon she can be,” Andrei said bluntly.
I shot Andrei a warning glance, but my father didn’t deny the accusation. If anything, he simply shrugged and said, “It’s worth a shot. I know she’s excellent in the ring for someone of her experience and stature, and seeing her abilities in the field might be very telling.”
“What about Max and Jane?” I blurted out.
“They’ll be cared for,” David assured me. “Max is in the healing chambers today for his next treatment, and last 1 heard, Jane wouldn’t leave his side.”
