Natalia’s POV
The healer drew my blood while I sat on the examination cot with the curtain pulled around me for privacy, then had me leave a urine sample to be tested. The whole process took maybe ten minutes, but it felt like hours.
“Well, you don’t appear to have a stomach bug,” the healer said with a furrowed brow as she checked my vitals and my throat for signs of illness.
“Do you think I’m…” I couldn’t quite seem to finish the sentence.
The healer’s lips twitched into a faint but warm smile. “Let’s check. I’ll be right back with the results,” she said before disappearing through the curtain with both samples.
I sat there alone, waiting, my hands gripping the edge of the cot the entire time. My stomach was still roiling, although whether from nausea or nerves, I couldn’t tell anymore.
The pregnancy test from six years ago had been similar. Quick. Clinical. Terrifying in its simplicity. One moment I’d been living my life as normal, and the next I’d been staring at a positive result that had changed everything,
What if it was happening again?
If it were, though, I couldn’t help but smile this time. Things were different now; Andrei and I loved each other. Our family was whole. A new baby would be a cause for a joyous celebration, not fear and five years of desperate hiding.
If only Andrei were here to celebrate with me… But instead, he was miles and miles away, dealing with rogues and building walls and trying to keep our territory safe from a threat that we hadn’t even begun to fully understand.
Finally, the curtain parted, and the healer returned holding a small piece of parchment folded up in her hands.
“Well?” I asked, hardly daring to hear the answer.
She handed me the paper with that small smile again. “Take a look for yourself.”
I took the paper and unfolded it, then looked down at the results and gasped, clapping my hand over my mouth. It was positive. I really was… pregnant.
My hand went from my mouth to my stomach automatically, pressing against the flat area where a new little life was apparently growing. Another baby. Andrei’s baby. Our baby.
Maybe that explained the surge of strength yesterday during the spar with Greta, I thought. My body must have been protecting not just me, but the tiny life inside of me. The thought made me want to cry and leap for joy all
at once.
“How far along is it?” I managed to ask, looking back up at the healer.
“Well, it’s hard to say exactly, but based on your symptoms, I’d estimate about six weeks. Maybe seven.” The healer sat down on the stool beside the cot. “You’ll need to take it easy, of course. No heavy training, no strenuous activity. And you should tell the father as soon as possible.”
I nodded, still staring at the paper. With that, the healer left me alone with the positive test result and a beat full of conflicting emotions.
I was going to have another baby. Jane and Max were going to have a sibling, Andrei was going to be a father again. We could do things right this time–no more missed birthdays, no more missed first steps, no mor missed anything
It felt like a second chance to be a real family.
