Chapter 295

Another little oneA new baby with that sweet smell and tiny feet and a head of jet black hair just like the others

Despite everything, tears of joy pricked my eyes. I knew with every fiber of my being that I wanted this baby- there was no question about it. I decided, then, that I would write Andrei a letter. The healer gave me a pen and paper, and I wrote quickly, not wanting to waste any time.

Andrei,

I don’t know how to say this except to just say it: I’m pregnant. The healer confirmed it today. About six or seven weeks along, she thinks.

I know this isn’t the best timing. But I thought you should know as soon as possible, and I want you to know that I’m happy and I want to keep it, and I have a feeling you would feel the same way.

But I also want to admit that I’m scared. I’m scared of doing this without you. I’m scared that something will happen and you won’t be here. I’m scared that our family will just keep getting pulled apart before we ever really get a chance to be together.

I wish you were here. I wish we could celebrate this properly. I wish things were peaceful and normal and we could just be a family without all the chaos. So please come back soon. I know you have a lot on your plate, but please don’t wait too long to come back.

I love you. And I miss you.

-Natalia

When I was finished, I folded the letter and sealed it with wax, then took it to the messenger before I could secondguess myself. The messenger took it without question and promised it would reach Moonshadow within two days. Knowing Andrei, the messenger would likely return with a letter promising to come as soon as possible or Andrei himself.

That night, I could hardly sleep because I was so excited to hear Andrei’s responseor perhaps even see it in the flesh.

The next morning, after another wave of sickness, I was making my way down to the dining hall for a much- needed breakfast to replenish my energy when Celeste appeared in the corridor. She looked like she hadn’t slept muchthere were dark circles under her eyes, and her hair wasn’t as perfectly styled as usual. The only typical thing about her were the ruby earrings shining in her ears.

Natalia. Just who I was looking for,she said quickly, stepping in front of me. I wanted to askWhat did the healer say yesterday?

I hesitated. The pregnancy was still so new, so fragile. I didn’t want to tell anyone except Andrei yet. Not until I’d had more time to process it myself. For now, it was just for us to know.

It was nothing,I lied. Just a stomach bug like I thought. The test came back negative.

Celeste’s face fell. Her whole posture seemed to deflate, and she looked away quickly. Oh. I see.

The reaction surprised me. I wasn’t expecting her to look so upset.

Are you okay?I asked, curious.

I’m fine.Celeste straightened. I justI was hoping it would be good news for you. That’s all.

Something about the way she said it made my chest warm pleasantly. Despite everything that had happened between us, I was touched by her concern. Maybe she was a bit softer underneath the hard and cruel exterior than I gave her credit for.

Celeste was just turning to leave when I suddenly blurted out on a whim, Would you want to have dinner with me tomorrow night? In my chambers. Just the two of us.

Celeste blinked. What?

Dinner. I thought maybe we could continue yesterday’s conversation.
