Chapter 299
Natalia’s POV
“I lied yesterday. I’m pregnant with Andrei’s child.”
As soon as those words came out of my mouth, Celeste looked like she had just seen a ghost. The wine bottle, once frozen in her hands, nearly slipped from her fingers before she carefully set it on the table with a trembling hand.
“You’re pregnant,” she whispered. It wasn’t a question.
I scrubbed my hands over my face and nodded. “I was going to keep it a secret until Andrei returned, but… Yes.” I glanced at her through my fingers. “You’re going to tell everyone now, aren’t you?”
Frankly, I expected Celeste to say or do something nasty. But Celeste almost looked like she flinched when I said that, and I wondered if I’d been too harsh.
To my surprise and relief, she shook her head. “No, I won’t tell anyone. Your secret is…” Her throat bobbed. ” Safe with me.”
I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding, even if her reaction seemed more tense than I expected.
“Thank you,” I said. “The healer said I’m about seven weeks along, by the way.”
“Are you planning on keeping it?” Celeste asked.
I nodded, and the relief on Celeste’s face was strange. She looked like she’d just won the lottery for a moment, her face splitting into an uncharacteristic smile, before she quickly schooled it again.
“Wow. You really like kids, huh?” I laughed, picking up my fork and poking at my potatoes. I supposed that children were sacred in this society, even more so than anywhere else because of the whole combining abilities and creating stronger generations thing.
Celeste hesitated, then nodded stiffly. But then her expression shifted to something that looked like worry.
“When are you planning to leave Bloodmoon?” she asked. “To go back to Ashmoor or Moonshadow or… anywhere but here?”
Well… That was a strange way to put it. But I shrugged and popped a potato into my mouth. “I don’t know yet,” I said around the mouthful. “I would prefer to give birth at home, so… Once it’s safe to travel with Max, I guess. And once the rogue situation calms down. Could be a few weeks. Maybe longer. Not sure.”
It didn’t really matter to me where I was so long as Andrei, the twins, and I were together. If I had to stay in Bloodmoon, then I’d be happy so long as I had my family with me.
Celeste’s jaw ticked. “So you’re planning to stay here? In Bloodmoon? While you’re pregnant?”
“Where else would I go? Max still needs treatment, and I can’t exactly drag him through a rogue–infested forest right now.” I chewed slowly, swallowed, then frowned at her. “Why? What’s wrong? You’re acting like I’m committing a sin by staying put while I’m pregnant.”
“Natalia, you need to leave sooner than that.” Celeste looked a little panicked now. “It’s not safe for you here.

Not now.”
“What are you talking about?”

“You’re unmarked and pregnant. Do you know what that means in a place like Bloodmoon?” Celeste’s eyes darted to the door like she was checking to make sure no one was listening, then leaned in and whispered, “The males here will see you as an opportunity. They’ll think they have a chance to mark you and pass on their abilities to your unborn child.”
I blinked. “That’s ridiculous. I’m already with Andrei-”
“And Andrei isn’t here.” Celeste’s face darkened. “Look, I know it sounds paranoid, but you have to understand how Bloodmoon works. Abilities are everything here. They define your status, your worth, your entire future. An unmarked pregnant woman is… She’s a target. You don’t want to be forcibly marked, do you?”
The way she said it made something cold settle in my stomach. “My father would never let anyone touch me,” I said slowly.
