They let go of me so fast I nearly fell. David caught my arm, steadying, the, while my father stepped between me

and the warriors.

“We’ll handle this,” Alexander said coldly, “The rest of you, get back to your duties. And someone take Martha’s body to the healers, for Goddess‘ sake!”

He didn’t wait for a response. My father turned and guided me out of the kitchen with David flanking, my other side. We walked in silence through the corridors until we reached a small study on the second floor. My father shut the door behind us and locked it tightly.

“Sit,” he said gently, gesturing to one of the chairs.

I sank into it, only realizing now that my whole body was shaking and I was clutching my flat belly as if to protect the little life within. David knelt in front of me, checking my arms where the warriors had grabbed me. Already, bruises were forming on my wrists.

“Tell us what happened,” my father said, pulling up another chair to sit across from me. “Start from the beginning.”

I took a shaky breath. “I had dinner with Celeste last night. She brought wine. I cooked the food.”

“Why were you having dinner with Celeste?” David asked.

“I thought… I thought maybe we could work things out. Be civil to each other. She’d apologized for how she’d been treating me, said she wanted to change.” I rubbed my wrists, wincing at the tenderness. “She brought a bottle of wine and two glasses.”

“Did you drink any?” Alexander asked.

“No. She kept trying to get me to, though. She kept pushing and pushing even when I said I didn’t want any.” I met my father’s eyes. “I couldn’t drink the wine because… because I’m pregnant.”

Both men went completely still.

“What?” David breathed.

“I’m pregnant. About seven weeks. I found out a few days ago.” Tears burned my eyes. “I couldn’t drink the wine because of the baby, but Celeste kept insisting. When I finally told her why I couldn’t, she got this strange look on her face and said I’m not safe here and left suddenly.”

My father and brother didn’t say a word.

“I didn’t want to waste the wine, and the cook helped me prepare the meal, so I gave it to her,” I continued. “I didn’t know it was poisoned.”

“You think Celeste poisoned it?” David asked.

“I don’t know. One would assume…” I shook my head, pressing my hands harder into my belly. “I told you everything I know.”

“Well, then we’ll just have to find out the rest, won’t we?” My father stood abruptly and turned on his heel,
