Chapter 303
Natalia’s POV
“Celeste, did you put poison in the wine you gave Natalla last night?” my father asked. He ignored his wife completely, and although his voice was soft and quiet, there was an edge to it that made even my spine stiffened
Helena’s eyes narrowed to slits. Behind her, Celeste hardened her expression–but I caught the briefest glimpse of panic there as she glanced at my belly again,
“How dare you, Alexander,” Helena snarled, folding her arms over her chest. “How dare you come here and accuse my child of attempted murder.”
“I’m not accusing anyone of anything,” my father sald calmly, holding his hands up. “I’m asking a question. A question that needs an answer, considering someone is dead and it seems my pregnant daughter may have been the intended target.”
Helena’s eyes snapped to my hands, which were still pressed against my belly, and something dark flashed across her face. “Pregnant,” she repeated slowly, tilting her head. “Interesting,”
I pressed my lips together, inwardly grinding my teeth. So now everyone knew the truth. I had hoped to keep it a secret until Andrei returned, but now it was too late.
My father straightened, once again ignoring Helena, and turned to his stepdaughter. “Celeste, if you attempted to poison Natalia, it would behoove you to tell the truth–you won’t be punished as harshly if you’re honest. Was it revenge, perhaps? Over what happened with Karl?”
Celeste swallowed hard and opened her mouth as if to answer, but Helena cut in before she could.
“I know Celeste isn’t your biological daughter, Alexander, but this is low,” Helena bit out, pointing at me. “Ever since she showed up, you’ve bent over backwards to accommodate the little outsider and her bastard children. And now you want to blame my daughter for something she didn’t do just because you can’t stand the thought that maybe your precious Natalia isn’t as loved as you think she is.”
David tensed beside me, but my father remained calm and collected.
“This isn’t about playing favorites, Helena. I’m only going off of the evidence I’ve received from Natalia thus far.” He lifted his chin toward Celeste. “Celeste, you can tell me the truth. If what happened was out of passion and not calculated, perhaps we can come to a resolution-”
“Evidence?” Helena scoffed. “You hardly know Natalia–how do you know she’s telling the truth? Celeste has been here for most of her life, serving this pack, following the rules, and being the perfect daughter to you. You should be ashamed of yourself, Alexander.”
“This doesn’t concern you, Helena,” Alexander growled, clearly growing frustrated now. “Step aside so I can speak directly to Celeste, and stay out of it.”
“No.” Helena held her ground. “If you have the right to defend your child, then so do I.”
I felt sick as I watched the two stand off against each other. The last thing I needed right now was a feud–not only because stress like this was bad for an early pregnancy and I’d already had enough stress for one lifetime, but also because I apparently had at least one enemy in this place. Likely far more than that. I didn’t need to be causing fights and strife.
