Chapter 304

Celeste’s lips parted, cheeks reddening faintly. For a moment, I thought she might speak. “I did it.”

We all turned at the sound of the gruff voice, and my eyes widened when I saw who was now standing in the doorway: Greta. The Gamma warrior who had challenged me to a spar just a few days ago. David had said she was one of Celeste’s loyal followers, and I had absolutely smoked her at the end of the spar.

“Greta,” Helena said sharply. “What are you doing-

“It was me.” Greta’s eyes found mine across the room, and they were full of hate. “She doesn’t belong here, bringing her bastard children and disrupting our pack–disrupting the relationship of Celeste and Karl. So I slipped poison into the wine bottle when the cook wasn’t looking, knowing that Natalia would be blamed and cast out–or perhaps executed.”

The silence that followed was deafening. For a long moment, it felt as if all the air had been sucked out of the room, making it impossible for me to draw in a full breath.

This woman, making wild assumptions about me, had purposely killed an innocent person just to get revenge

on me.

My mind instantly went back to Celeste’s warnings last night. She’d said I wasn’t safe here, that I was already a target but even more of one now that I was pregnant.

Maybe she was right.

My father didn’t hesitate. “Guards!” he bellowed, and two warriors appeared in the doorway immediately, having been waiting just outside.

“Take Gamma Greta to the holding cells,” my father ordered. “She just openly confessed to murder and treason.”

“Yes, Alpha,” one of the guards said, moving toward Greta.

Greta didn’t resist as they grabbed her arms. She just kept staring at me with that same hateful expression. You’ll never be safe here,” she said as they dragged her toward the door. “There are others who feel the same way I do.”

And then she was gone.

No one spoke for a long time after that. Or maybe they did I couldn’t hear anything through the sound of my own heartbeat in my ears.

She was right. Celeste was right. I would never be safe here.

If only I had known… I would have left with Andrei. I would have found a way to ensure Max could return home safely. I would have done anything to ensure my family’s safety.

“Well,” Helena finally said, clearing her throat, “I suppose you owe my daughter an apology.”

Alexander’s jaw ticked, but I quickly stepped in and said, “Celeste, I’m sorry that happened. I only thought you

might have been involved because you had given me the wine”

When I looked at Celeste, her face was ashen. She was wringing her hands in her skirt, and from here, I could see her fingers trembling before she quickly hid them behind her back.

She didn’t speak. Just nodded and sank back down into her chair and picked her needlework up again.

Helena’s gaze was still fiery enough to set the room ablaze. “If you’re all quite done accusing my daughter of attempted murder, I’d appreciate it if you would leave,” she ground out.

My father and David nodded and flanked me, gently taking me by the arms and guiding me toward the door. I didn’t resist, suddenly too exhausted and sick to my stomach to stay here a moment longer.

But just before I left, I took one last glance over my shoulder and met Celeste’s gaze.

There were tears in her eyes. And her hands were trembling again.

I didn’t get a chance to look at her for long, though, before Helena stepped in the way and glared at me with such malice that it made my stomach drop. Her lip curled to reveal a furious, hateful sneer, and then she slammed the door shut.

The last thing I heard before my father and brother guided me away was the sound of the lock clicking into place on the other side of the door.
