It was likely too late now. Knowing Mother, she had acted quickly and efficiently. Her supporters, like Greta, were few here but they were fiercely loyal and would do anything she requested of them.

But it didn’t matter now, did it? She was going to return once her job was complete and then she was going to take care of me. If I survived her punishment, she would continue my training. Hurt me until there was nothing left this time, and then I would truly be nothing but the perfect tool to create the bloodline she and Father desired so badly.

Yes, she had returned already–1 could hear the key turning in the lock now, the hinges creaking quietly as the door cracked open–

“Celeste?”

It wasn’t Mother’s voice that I heard. It was Karl’s.

I shot to my feet, heart leaping into my throat. “Karl–you came-”

The moment he saw the marks and tear tracks on my cheeks, his eyes widened. He came rushing over, lifting his hands as if to touch my face, but then dropped them back to his sides.

“What happened?” he whispered. “I read your note, but I don’t understand…”

“There’s no time to explain.” I wanted to grip his hands, but I didn’t. I couldn’t. He probably wouldn’t let me after all of the awful, cruel things I had done to him. “We have to hurry. The children could already be in danger.”

Karl nodded and gestured for me to follow. “Everyone is asleep now, but we should still be careful in case of guards. Stay behind me, and wear this.” He handed me one of his cloaks, which I put on, inhaling his familiar scent, and pulled the hood up.

We made our way through the corridors as quietly as possible, staying in the shadows and avoiding the main hallways where the guards were usually posted. When we reached Natalia’s room, Karl knocked softly, but there

was no answer.

He tried the handle. The door was unlocked, which immediately sent up warning flags in my mind. I’d never known Natalia to leave her room unlocked, especially not at night. Trust me, I’d tried.

We slipped inside to find that the room was empty. The bed looked like it had been slept in recently, but there was no sign of Natalia anywhere.

“Her shoes are gone,” Karl said, pointing to the spot by the door.

I wanted to be relieved, but I couldn’t assume that she had left of her own accord. She could have been tricked, or Mother might have staged it to look like she’d simply left.

We headed to the medical wing after that–if she wasn’t in her room, then she’d likely be there. The training arena was unlikely given her pregnancy.

When we peeked through the door of the medical wing, she wasn’t there, either. And the twins were gone, too, judging from Max’s empty cot.

Karl moved to talk to one of the healers, but I stopped him. “No,” I whispered, pulling him out of sight. “Mother could have cohorts anywhere. If we’re going to tell anyone, we should talk to someone who would actually care if Natalia is missing.”

“David, then,” Karl said firmly.

I considered that for a moment. David was the most obvious choice, of course–he was Natalia’s brother and would do anything to protect her even though they’d only just met.

But he’d never liked me, and approaching him now would be risky. If he suspected that my mother was involved, then I’d be condemned, too.

But what choice did I have? I couldn’t live with myself if I stayed silent and those children met a horrible demise.
