Chapter 310

Natalia’s POV
The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the acrid scent of blood in my nostrils. Then came the smell of rotten leaves and dirt.
And when I opened my eyes, I didn’t find the dark stairwell, the healer’s chambers, or the ceiling of my bedroom above me.
All I saw were thorns. Twisted and gnarled like jagged claws reaching down toward me.
I sat up abruptly with a gasp, looking around wildly. The cold air bit at my bare skin through my nightgown, the chilly wind rustling through my hair and the leaves overhead.
I was in the Thornwood.
Crying out from shock, I scrambled to my feet, only to immediately stagger back against the rough bark of a tree. This time, the dizziness had nothing to do with morning sickness. I strained my mind against the fog, and vaguely recalled the harsh cloth being pressed against my nose and mouth, the hands pinning me down, the hateful look of two pairs of eyes glowing above me just before everything went dark.
I’d been tricked, drugged, and taken into the Thornwood. I was alone in my nightgown without a weapon in this dangerous place, and my body ached and my head pounded.
But I didn’t care about myself right now. Above everything else, above the fear and pain and confusion, one thought shot through the rest.
Where the fuck were my children?
“Max?” I called out, shakily pushing myself away from the tree. “Jane? Are you out here?”
There was no answer. Even the birds were quiet.
I turned in a slow circle, taking in the dense forest around me. It was dark, probably well past midnight by now, which made the confusing array of trees and brambles even more ominous than usual.
Just then, a flash of color caught my eye: something blue, half–hidden beneath a pile of leaves about twenty feet
away.
I stumbled toward it and dropped to my knees to brush the leaves aside. It was a piece of Max’s shirt, I realized with a sickening feeling in my gut. There were dark stains on the fabric that looked like blood.
“No, no, no,” I whispered, clutching the scrap to my chest.
I searched the area frantically, pushing aside branches and kicking through the undergrowth. More pieces of clothing turned up–part of Jane’s dress, one of Max’s socks, scraps of fabric that looked like they’d been deliberately scattered just to alert me to the fact that my children were out here with me, just as–if not more- confused and terrified as I was.
“MAX!” I screamed, growing desperate now. “JANE!”
The forest was so dense that my voice didn’t even echo back at me.

I picked a direction and started running. Branches caught at my hair and dress, thorns tore at my arms, but I didn’t slow down. The twins were out there somewhere, probably scared and bleeding and calling, for me.
The forest was a maze. Every tree looked the same, every path led to another path that led to another dead end. I called their names until my throat was raw, following what might have been footprints or animal tracks or just my imagination.
Suddenly, halfway through my rampage, a snarl from behind me made me spin around.
