Chapter 311

Oh, thank the Goddess,I sobbed, dropping to my knees and pulling them both against me. They felt so small and fragile in my arms. Are you hurt? What happened?

L. I don’t know,Jane sniffled. We just woke up here. My head hurts

I ground my teeth together angrily. Someone had hurt and drugged my children and dumped them in the forest. I didn’t care if it happened to mebut to go after two sixyearolds?

As soon as we made it back to the compound, I would find whoever did this and rip their fucking throat out with my teeth.

Trying to remain calm, I looked around at the dark forest. Truthfully, I had no idea which direction would take us back to Bloodmoon. All the paths looked the same, and I’d been running in circles for what felt like hours. We could have been anywhere by now.

We were lost.

Alright,I said, forcing my voice to stay even, everything’s fine. We’re gonna camp out for the night, okay?

Max’s face crumpled. But I want to go home now.

I know, sweetheart. But it’s getting dark, and it’s not safe to walk around the forest at night. So we’re going to have a little adventure instead.I smoothed his hair back from his forehead. Like camping. Do you remember when Uncle Damon and I took you camping when you were smaller?

Both twins shook their heads, not recalling the weekend Damon and I had taken them to the cottage and we camped out under the stars. Of course they wouldn’t rememberthey were only three years old at the time. And even then, that had just been in the backyard, not in the fucking Thornwood.

Well, we’ll have to make this memorable, then.I forced a smile and stood, helping them to their feet along with me. We’re going to find a good spot to set up camp, and we’ll tell stories and look at the stars.

The twins seemed to regain a little of their morale at that. I found a spot where three large trees grew close together, their trunks forming a natural shelter. I gathered fallen branches and built walls on the open sides, leaving small gaps so I could see out but making it difficult for anything to see in.

The twins helped, collecting leaves to make the ground softer and finding smooth stones to mark the corners of our makeshift camp. I kept up a steady stream of chatter the whole time, telling them about different types of trees and which berries were safe to eat and how to navigate by the stars.

Are you hungry?I asked once we’d settled in for the night.

A little,Max admitted.

Making a fire was too risky, but I had found some blackberry bushes during our search for shelter. The berries were tart and not quite ripe, but they were better than nothing. The twins shared them while I told them stories about brave knights and clever princesses who always found their way home.

Anything to keep them from realizing that we were actually in grave danger.

Max fell asleep first, curled up against my side with his thumb in his mouth. Jane lasted a little longer, but

eventually her eyes closed too and her breathing deepened.

I sat awake in the darkness, listening to every sound the forest made. An owl hooting somewhere overhead. The rustle of small animals in the underbrush. A distant howl that I hoped didn’t belong to a rogue
