Chapter 323
Natalia’s POV
The following morning, I woke to find that Andrei’s side of the bed was already empty, although still warm when I stretched my hand out. Cracking my eyes open, I found him tiptoeing around the room, carefully putting on his leathers and tying his hair back in a knot. He was preparing to leave.
“Where are you going?” I asked, sitting up and rubbing my eyes.
He winced as if he hadn’t intended to wake me up.
“Just going on a border patrol,” he replied. “One of our guards said there were more rogue sightings last night near the southern perimeter. I want to check the tracks myself, see if I can make sense of it.”
I was already swinging my legs out of bed. “Oh, okay. I’ll come with you.”
“No.” Andrei shook his head. “You need to rest. It’s probably not best for the baby if you join me.”
“Why? The baby is fine,” I laughed, standing and stretching. “And so am I. In fact, the exercise and fresh air could do me some good.”
Andrei sighed heavily as he adjusted the straps on his leathers. “Natalia, you’ve been through hell these past few days. The stress alone could-”
“Could what?” I crossed my arms. “Andrei, I’m seven weeks pregnant, not dying. I can handle a patrol.”
“It’s not safe. What if we run into rogues while we’re out there?”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m not made of porcelain, you know.”
“I know that.” Andrei shrugged on his jacket. “But things are different now.”
“Different how?” I moved to the dresser and started pulling out clothes. “Because there’s a baby the size of a grape in my uterus? That doesn’t make me helpless. In fact, during a spar in Bloodmoon, I had a sudden burst of power that the healers believe to be connected to the pregnancy. If anything, I’m stronger with the baby.”
Andrei huffed and sat on the edge of the bed to pull on his boots. “Look, I’m saying you’re helpless or anything. I’m saying you’re carrying our child and I’d rather not risk-” 41
“Andrei, I shredded a rogue’s throat in the Thornwood just days ago. All on my own, mind you. I think I can manage a simple border patrol in our own territory.”
“Our territory?”
I blinked. “What?”
Andrei was looking at me with a strange expression, like he’d caught me saying something I hadn’t meant to. You said ‘our territory.‘ So you see Moonshadow as your pack again?”
My cheeks burned. Had I said that? “I… I meant both Moonshadow and Ashmoor. You know I consider both my
home now.”
“Do you?”
”
“Of course I do. Just because I left doesn’t mean I stopped seeing Moonshadow as…” I trailed off, not sure how to
finish.

“As what?”
“As my rightful place,” I said quietly. “I never stopped thinking of it that way, even when I was angry at you. Even when I thought we were over for good.”
Something flickered across Andrei’s face. It wasn’t quite a smile, but it was damn close to one. “That might become more of a reality soon than you realize.”
