Chapter 324

Unbidden, my mind went back to the day I’d defeated Greta in the sparring ringthe sudden burst of energy that the healers believed to be potentially connected to my pregnancy.

The thought made me smile and pat my stomach.

We’re not as breakable as everyone thinks, little one,I whispered. In fact, I think we’re stronger together.

Andrei was waiting for me by the gates when I came outside. He still didn’t look entirely pleased that I was coming, but I could also tell he was relieved to have me by his side as we made our way toward the southern border. It felt good to feel the cool air on my facesoothed my morning nausea.

The estate grounds gave way to forest as we followed the patrol route. Andrei led us along the established paths, checking markers and stopping occasionally to examine broken branches or disturbed earth. We didn’t speak often, although it was nice to be in each other’s presence for a little while.

It reminded me of those early days of the alliance between Moonshadow and Ashmoor, back when the two of us went on that border patrol.

Only this time, it was far more comfortable and I didn’t feel the need to check over my shoulder constantly to make sure he wasn’t going to stab me.

Eventually, we found a solid set of rogue tracks in the mud. We followed them for another mile, noting where they split off and rejoined, where they’d stopped to mark territory or investigate scents.

By the time we approached the southern guard outpost, we were both certain that the rogues were intentionally scouting our perimeter in search of holes in our defenses. They were likely planning to launch another attack.

Andrei and I climbed the stairs to the top of the outpost. Two guards snapped to attention when they saw us approaching.

Alpha, one of them said, bowing his head. Any trouble on the route?

Fresh tracks about a mile back,Andrei replied. At least three rogues passed by in the night, maybe more.

While Andrei spoke to the guards, I walked over to the desk, studying the logbook they used to record patrol schedules and shift changes. To my surprise, I found that they used the same routes at the same times, day after day.

You’re too predictable,I said, looking up at the guards. “They know exactly when you’ll be where.

The guards exchanged glances. Ma’am?

Your patrol schedule. It’s the same every day. Same routes, same intervals, same checkpoints.I flipped through several pages of identical entries. The rogues have been watching you long enough to memorize your entire rotation.

What would you suggest?the older guard asked.

Stagger your patrols. Change the times, vary the routes. Don’t let them predict where you’ll be.I closed the logbook and set it back on the desk. And make sure to mark the territory regularly. They’re using scent trails to navigate our borders. Make sure they know this land belongs to us.

Both guards nodded and replied in unison, Yes, Luna.

Luna. The title made heat creep up my neck. I glanced at Andrei and found him watching me with his eyebrows

raised.

She’s right. Double the markers along the eastern ridge,he said. And make sure you’re rotating through all the secondary paths, not just the main routes.
