Natalia’s POV

A few days later, I found myself down at the southern perimeter again, this time with a group of warriors who were working on reinforcing the damaged sections of the outer wall. I’d been studying the patrol routes and guard rotations all week, and there were some glaring weaknesses in our defenses that needed addressing.

“You need another watchtower here,” I said, pointing to a gap between two existing posts. “There’s at least a quarter mile of blind spot that rogues could exploit.”

Mila, who was overseeing the construction, squinted at the area I’d indicated. “That’s going to require a lot of stone and lumber.”

“Then find a way to get more stone and lumber. Frugality in this matter is not a risk we can take.” I pulled out the rough map I’d been sketching. “You can harvest lumber from where the tree line comes closest to the wall–we need to clear those trees back another fifty feet anyway. They’re providing too much cover for anyone trying to approach.”

“Good call,” Mila noted, nodding and jotting the information down on her notepad. “We’ll get right on that today.”

I nodded curtly and turned to leave. “Oh, and there aren’t enough spikes on the tops of these walls. Use any leftover materials you can.”

“Of course, Luna,” Mila replied. I shot her a withering look over my shoulder at the use of the title that wasn’t truly mine, but she was already walking away, instructing the Gammas on the task.

After that, I spent the rest of the morning walking the perimeter with different groups, pointing out weak spots and suggesting improvements while Andrei was apparently back at the estate, handling matters that were unbeknownst to me. I didn’t see him all morning.

By the time I made it back to the main courtyard, I was covered in dirt and my back was aching, but I felt useful. Productive.

Damon was sitting on the steps of the main house with his shirt off and fresh bandages wrapped around his torso. He looked much better than he had a few days ago, and smiled and patted the spot next to him when he saw me coming.

“You’re supposed to be resting,” I said as I approached.

“I am resting. I’m sitting down, aren’t I?”

“Sitting outside in the sun without a shirt on is not resting.” I took a seat beside him and wiped some of the sweat from my brow. “Where are Grace and Andrei?”

“Beats me.” He shrugged. “Maybe they’re off kissing in a closet somewhere. Then you and I will be back at square one.”

I rolled my eyes and swatted at him. “Seems the pain meds are getting to your head after all.”

“Perhaps. I did mistake someone’s yappy little terrier for Jane earlier.”

“Damon, you’re lucky you’re injured, otherwise I’d kill you for saying that,” I growled, although I couldn’t help but smirk. “How are you feeling?”

“Like I got hit by an axe,” he said cheerfully, checking his nails. “But alive, which is more than I expected a few
