Chapter 329
So I tried not to think about any of it.
“So,” I said, turning toward Damon, “you and Grace are engaged. That was quick, eh?”
He shrugged. “She was always meant to be my Luna. I was just the fool who didn’t make it happen sooner. Thankfully, I came to my senses while I’m still pretty enough to deserve her.”
I snorted. “You were never pretty enough to deserve her.”
“Ouch.” Damon clutched his chest dramatically. “And here I thought you liked me.”
“I tolerate you,” I clarified, although I leaned my head on his shoulder and sighed happily. “I’m really glad for you, Damon. It’s good to see you in love with someone who returns the feelings.”
“And I want nothing but the same for you.” Damon wrapped his arm around my shoulders and gave me a squeeze. “You know, we should make it a double wedding. Kill two birds with one stone.”
I jerked my head up. “What are you talking about?”
“Oh, come on. Everyone knows Andrei’s planning to propose. The man can barely keep his hands out of his pockets when you’re around.” Damon wiggled his eyebrows. “Might as well make it official.”
“Well, even if that were the case, I wouldn’t want to steal your spotlight.”
“Please. You could get married in a burlap sack and still upstage us.”
“Damon,” I warned.
“What? I’m just saying, it would be efficient. One big party instead of two smaller ones.” He leaned back against the steps. “Besides, it’s not like you haven’t been waiting long enough.”
“I can wait a little longer,” I said softly.
Damon’s grin faded, replaced by something more serious. “Can you, though?”
I looked up at him, ready to brush off the question with another joke, but something in his expression stopped me. He wasn’t teasing anymore.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean you’ve been waiting for eleven years, Natalia. Five years of a loveless marriage. Five years of hiding. Another year of what–ifs. How much longer are you really willing to wait?”
The question hit closer to home than I wanted to admit. “It’s complicated.”
“No, it’s not.” He shook his head. “You love him, he loves you, you’re having another baby together. The only thing complicated about it is how long you’re both going to keep dancing around what you actually want.”
“We’ve got time,” I murmured.
“We all think we ‘have time‘, but that’s not always the case. Four days ago, I almost bled out on these very steps. You never know how much time you have left.” Damon’s eyes found mine. “Don’t waste it.”
I stared at him for a long moment, my jaw working uselessly. “When did you get so wise?” I finally asked.
“Near–death experiences have a way of clarifying things.”

We sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes, watching pack members work on repairs around the courtyard. I was about to head inside when I heard running footsteps behind me. One of the Omegas came rushing toward us looking panicked.
“Luna Natalia!” she called out. “There’s been an incident at the house!”
My blood went cold, mind instantly going to one place: the twins. Oh, Goddess, what if something had happened to Max while I was out?
I didn’t wait for details. I took off running toward the main house, my heart pounding against my ribs. The front door was standing wide open, and I could hear voices coming from inside.
I burst through the entrance, already scanning for signs of trouble, already preparing for the worst. And that was when I saw the streamers, the balloons, and the grins as my friends jumped out from behind the furniture.
