Chapter 338

Andrei’s POV
By the time the skirmish ended, I was dead on my feet–which was a far cry from the three warriors who had actually died during the battle, fighting bravely against vicious rogues whose bloodthirst seemed to outweigh their own desire for survival–but there was still far too much work to be done to take the time to rest.
The border had been ravaged by the attack. Walls were burnt, swathes of forest having gotten caught up in the blaze and reduced to ash and blackened trees. I tried not to look at the innocent animals who had died during the mayhem, but it was hard not to when their eyes were still wide and glassy, proof of the terror and confusion they’d experienced in their final moments.
“The rogues seem to be clearing the way for something bigger,” Mila muttered, scrubbing her hands over her weary face as we examined the map of the territory spread out on the wooden table between us. “I think this is just the first wave of several.”
I grunted in reply. She was right. She usually was when it came to these sorts of things; I just wished she wasn’t.
I leaned back in my chair, eyes still scanning the map. There were too many weak spots in our defenses to count, too many things we hadn’t considered yet. Each time we seemed to gather ourselves enough to stave off one attack, we were already in the midst of staving off another.
It was brutal and unfair and fucking exhausting. I knew the rogues were trying to wear us down, trying to chip away at our defenses until we had no choice left but to retreat and let them encroach again on the main estate.
And most painful of all was the fact that I knew, deep in my bones, as sure as I knew that up was up and down was down, that they were only coming to slaughter all of us.
We didn’t have anything they seemed to want except, perhaps, land. If it was money or power that this so–called ” Winter King” wanted, he would have sent negotiations by now.
But he hadn’t. He had only sent murderers. Rapists. Barbarians.
If there was ever a doubt in my mind that this horde of rogues didn’t simply want to wipe the known territories from the face of the planet so they could have it all to themselves, there certainly wasn’t one now.
“Alpha, if I may.” Mila turned to me with a quizzical expression on her face.
“What is it?” I glanced up at her from beneath my brow.
She wrung her hands, clearly struggling with how to frame what she was about to say.
“Spit it out.”
Mila nodded and took a deep breath. “Part of the reason why the rogues have been able to ravage the territories like this is because of how separated we have all become. Thankfully, due to our alliance with Ashmoor, we’ve managed to stave them off for the most part. But some of the smaller northern territories have already fallen because of their lack of alliances.”
My teeth ground together so hard I thought they might crack. “I tried asking the other Alphas to send aid, to meet with me, to ally with us, anything,” I replied curtly. “They refused. They’re hunkering down, not forming coalitions.”
“Well, I think we should try again.” Mila dropped her hands and gripped the edge of the table, leaning closer with an imploring look in her eyes. “Perhaps if we… beg, they might consider it.”
Begging. The very word seemed to make the canvas tent we were sitting in shudder around us, but that was just the wind, bringing with it the scent of fire and decay. I wrinkled my nose at both the smell and the thought.

“I don’t like to beg for anything.”

“I know. Neither do 1,” Mila snorted. “But what other choice do we have? Separated like this, we’re weak. Vulnerable. But if we can convince the Alphas to ally with us, to extend their borders to meet ours, we could do what we’ve done with Ashmoor–share supplies, forces…‘
Once more, she was right. We were only a few miles away from the nearest pack, Green Ridge. Extending the walls there wouldn’t be too difficult, and it would allow easier communication and travel between packs.
“Try sending a letter to Green Ridge,” I said, pushing my chair back from the table and standing. “We were allied with them before all of this started. If we plead with them, they might change their minds.”
“And the others?” Mila asked. “There are two other packs remaining on either side of us: Aspen and Oakshield.”
I shrugged. “Send letters to all surrounding packs, I guess. I hate the idea of begging, but you’re right; we’d be stronger together, and the other Alphas would be fools to disagree at this point.”
Honestly, I doubted that the Alphas would agree, if our messengers even made it through the onslaught of rogues crawling the forests between territories lately. But desperate times called for desperate measures.
I couldn’t bear to be away from Natalia any longer than necessary, so I spent the rest of the day making sure that the border was secured again. I hardly slept that night, too busy tossing and turning and planning for the next attack to rest.
By morning the next day, I couldn’t stand it any longer. I left, returning home by sunset, even more exhausted than before. But the moment I saw her, my energy returned.
