Chapter 339

Andrei froze, one foot on the stairs, the other on the floor of the foyer. He turned slowly to look at his Beta, and 1 could see the hard set of his jaw, the tense line of his shoulders–all markers of frustration.
“Again?” he muttered, as if he could hardly believe it.
The Beta’s shoulders slumped as he handed Andrei the two letters he was holding, “These just arrived. The Alphas say they have no interest in an alliance at this time–that they’re focusing on fortifying their own defences, not combining forces with an Alpha who… Well, maybe you should read it yourself.”
Andrei snatched the letters away, green eyes hardening as he scanned what they said. A low growl grated in his throat at whatever he read.
I gingerly took the letters and read them myself when he was finished.
“I have no interest in forming an alliance with an Alpha who, for the better part of his history as Alpha, remained focused on his own personal drama rather than the good of the collective,” one letter from Aspen pack–one of the packs closest to us–read.
The other, signed by the Alpha of Oakshield pack, said pretty much the same. “You lied to the territories about a marriage to Lilith that was never solidified. Furthermore, your wife lied about her identity for five years. How can I trust that you won’t lie to me?”
Ouch.
I slowly set aside the letters and turned to Andrei. “You asked for backup again?” I asked.
He dragged a hand through his dark hair, which was loose around his shoulders and caked with ash, dirt, and blood that wasn’t his own.
“It was Mila’s idea. She said we should beg Aspen, Oakshield, and Green Ridge for an alliance–that the packs are stronger together, not separated.” He sighed and turned back to the stairs, knuckles turning right around the banister. “I guess I should have saved my pride instead.”
With that, Andrei turned and walked up the stairs. His footsteps were heavy, exhausted. I heard him stomp all the way down the hall until the bedroom door closed with a distant slam.
Once he was gone, I turned to his Beta. “Did Green Ridge respond?” I asked.
He shook his head. “Not yet, Luna.”
“Well.” I pulled my shoulders back. “Prepare your fastest messenger for me.”
“Ma’am?” The Beta looked at me with confusion, but I was already picking up my skirt and hurrying upstairs.
By the time Andrei emerged from the bath, actually looking—and smelling–like himself again, I had finished two letters and was halfway through the third. I glanced up briefly as he stepped out of the bathroom, feeling that familiar, pleasant warmth of desire spread through me at the sight of his towel slung low around the chiseled “V” line of his hips, but quickly returned to my work.
“What are you doing?”
Andrei crossed the room to peer over my shoulder as I wrote frantically. He hooked his chin over my shoulder, damp arms wrapping around me from behind. I nuzzled into him, but continued writing
“I’m writing letters to the Lunas of Aspen, Oakshield, and Green Ridge,” I replied.
