And, Goddess, how I wanted to. I could feel the knife warming again at the very thought,
But I slipped it back into its sheath, ignoring the urge to slay her with the dagger, no matter how tempting
“You said your old paramour owned this knife,” Andrei said, stepping closer to Lilith’s cell. “Was he ever able to make it do that?”
Lilith’s eye twitched, but she shook her head. “No. He really only kept it as a decoration. I don’t know what that just was, but I’d appreciate it if you keep it far away from me from now on, thanks.”
I glanced down at the sheath at my hip and suppressed a shudder. “Who gave it to him?” I found myself asking. If there were more weapons like this, in the hands of those rogues no less… then this was even worse than we thought.
Lilith thought for a moment, then shrugged. “I’m not sure exactly. All I know is that it was a gift from the Winter King.” She wrapped her arms around herself as if to ward off a sudden chill at the mere mention of the rogue leader. “I really don’t know anything else. Tell her, Andrei.”
I glanced at Andrei. His jaw feathered, but he nodded. “She already told me everything before.” He leaned a little closer to the bars, though. “And you’re sure this was the only weapon with these rubies that you remember seeing?”
Lilith nodded silently. I saw the way her eyes flicked over to the knife in clear terror. It was obvious that she had never seen anything like that before. She really didn’t know anything.
Unable to bear looking at her for another moment, I turned and left. Andrei followed soon after, and we made our way upstairs. I went straight to the living room, needing a drink after what happened. 1
“Whiskey?” I asked, holding up the bottle as I poured myself enough for about three servings‘ worth. Andrei nodded, and I did the same for him.
I crossed the room and handed him the glass, and we both plopped down on the sofa in front of the crackling fire. Neither of us spoke for a long minute–just drank and stared into the flames. But I could feel our minds racing in tandem. 1
“Are you thinking the same thing I’m thinking?” I finally asked, turning to him.
Andrei’s eyes met mine. “Well, I was just thinking that I’d like to bend you over the-”
“Be serious, Andrei. Don’t deflect.”
Andrei nodded. “I am thinking it. That if there are more weapons like that out there, in the hands of the rogues, then we’re royally fucked.”
“That’s putting it lightly.” I leaned back on the sofa, lifting my glass to eye–level so the amber liquid caught the light of the fire. “And if it’s like the metalsmith said, and the rubies can be used for whatever purpose they were honed for-”
“Then who knows what weapons of mass destruction that so–called ‘King‘ has,” Andrei finished for me.
“And let’s not forget Helena.” My jaw tightened just at the mention of that woman’s name. “Natalia said she mentioned a ‘weapon‘. And they both wore ruby jewelry, literally all the time.” I shuddered. “If she has any rubies, she could be using them as we speak.“1
As another brief silence fell between us, I considered what sort of use those rubies would have in jewelry. Powers

of seduction, perhaps? Espionage? Charming? The list could be infinitely long.
All I knew was that she was with my father and brother, and she was probably angry after everything that had happened.
