Chapter 357
I wore the earrings around for the rest of the day, just to be safe. Nothing happened, other than receiving more compliments on my jewelry than usual. I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary–no mind–reading abilities, no x–ray vision.
By the end of the day, some of the tension was beginning to slip from my shoulders. Perhaps they really were just pretty stones–perhaps those that Helena had in her possession weren’t anything special. That was one less threat to consider, I supposed.
But then, the next morning, it happened.
I was passing by Andrei’s study when I heard his voice coming from within.
“I’m sorry, but we can’t spare the materials… We can provide the manpower, but right now, our lumber supply is running short. Have you tried asking Oakshield? Last I heard, they had a surplus of building materials.”
I frowned, pausing in the hallway. A shortage of lumber? Ashmoor had plenty.
Not wanting to piss off our new allies so soon, I poked my head into the study.
“Ask Damon-”
My words died in my throat. Andrei wasn’t in the study, but I could still hear him speaking as if he were in the room with me.
Curious, I walked over to the open window and peered out into the yard below. Andrei was standing all the way on the other side of the garden, speaking to a Green Ridge messenger.
He sounded like he was right next to me.
I stared in shock for a moment, trying to make sense of it, and then it hit me as I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the window–the earrings.
“Aha!” I gasped, turning and hurrying downstairs. I paused by the den, listening to Jane and Max playing behind the closer door–clear as day, almost so loud it hurt. I hurried past the kitchen, overhearing two Omegas whispering about pack gossip, and even heard the sounds of warriors laughing in the barracks, which was way too far to normally be able to hear.
By the time I reached Andrei, I was grinning. I ripped the earrings out of my ears, and the sounds of the world around me suddenly returned to their normal volume. The difference was so startling that I felt as if I’d momentarily gone deaf.
“I think I found their purpose,” I beamed, handing him the earrings. “Send a letter to David right away, and send them back to Bloodmoon. I think these earrings could be put to better use in the seat of our enemy.”
Just then, as Andrei and I discussed our next moves, Karl passed by with a pile of books in his arms. He paused when he heard Celeste’s name mentioned.
“You’re writing to Celeste?” he asked, hurrying over. “She’s alright?”
I turned to him, noticing the hope in his eyes. Truthfully, David’s last letter… Wasn’t good. He hadn’t mentioned Celeste much, but when he did, he said that Helena was furious and was keeping her locked up.
My throat bobbed. “She’s alive, thanks to David.”
“I figured.” Karl stared down at his feet, understanding the implications without me even having to say that her

mother was behind her torment. Then again, I supposed he had already known for a very long time. “I don’t suppose you can get a message to her for me?”
Andrei and I exchanged looks. Andrei shrugged. “It wouldn’t hurt,” he said softly. “Might also keep Celeste on our side, especially if we want to trust her with these…” He held the earrings up and wiggled them a little.
