Celeste’s POV
David returned to my bedroom–or perhaps I should call it my prison cell now–a few days afterwards. It was past midnight, as usual, and he was holding a tray in his hands. I hardly looked up from where I was sitting in front of the fireplace, too exhausted from lack of food to pay attention, even if he was bringing me something to eat.
“Here.” David placed the tray on my lap. There was some bread and a bowl of soup, and I immediately dunked the bread into the broth, gobbling it up in a few bites. Meanwhile, he pulled an envelope out of his pocket and opened
“What’s that?” I asked around a mouthful of bread. David’s brows were lifted. I wondered if it was a response
from Natalia.
He silently handed me something from the envelope. I took it and opened it; it was a small, handwritten note
from Karl.
My heart leapt as I read the contents.
“Dear C, I want you to know that I’m okay, and so are the kids. I hope you’re okay, too. N says the note has to be short and vague, just in case it’s intercepted. But I love you still, no matter what you say. -K”
My eyes pricked with tears, but I blinked them away and tossed Karl’s note into the fireplace. I wanted to keep it so I could read it over and over, but I knew we couldn’t risk letting Mother see any of this. It was too dangerous.
David finished reading his letter, then did the same. We both watched for a moment as the paper curled and blackened in the flames.
Suddenly, he produced my earrings from the envelope. And without a word, he grabbed my hand and pricked the tip of my finger with his knife.
“Ow!” I exclaimed, yanking at his grip. “Why did you do that?”
“Quiet.” David didn’t release me. He squeezed the tip of my finger, forcing a drop of blood out, then let the blood drop onto the earrings in his palm.
“What the hell are you doing?” I whispered. When he finally released me, I rubbed my sore wrist, staring between him and the earrings.
“This is how we have to bond them, apparently.” He waited for a few seconds before wiping the blood off with a handkerchief, then handed the earrings to me. “Put them on. I want to see if it works.”
“What are they supposed to do?” I recalled Natalia’s last letter about the ruby–encrusted knife. The knife’s purpose was without question, but a pair of earrings could be used for a number of things.
As I slipped the hooks into my piercings, David explained what Natalia and Andrei had discovered. The earrings could be used for hearing at long distances.
I didn’t notice anything at first, but David, going off of what he had learned from the letter, explained how to channel my desires into the stones. I wasn’t sure if anything happened–not until I suddenly noticed that I could hear the murmuring of voices from down the hall as if they were right outside the door. With the thick stone walls in this place, that should have been impossible.
“Good.” David stood, taking the now–empty tray of food from my hands. “I’ll be back soon. You’re going to have to use those earrings.”

“What? But what about-”
David didn’t answer me. Before I could finish speaking, he had already slipped out of the room, leaving me alone
