He instructed me to wait until dinnertime the next day, then take the key and maid’s uniform he gave me and sneak out. He told me to sneak close enough to the dining room that the earrings picked up the conversation within while Mother and my stepfather were eating, and listen.
Meanwhile, David said he would be sneaking into Mother’s chambers and confiscating any rubies he could find. If I heard that she would be returning to her room before he was finished, I was supposed to run and tell him.
The plan seemed simple enough, and David assured me that if I obeyed, I wouldn’t be locked up for much longer.
At eight o’clock the next day, I dressed in the uniform, then took the key he’d given me out of the loose stone cubby in the wall and slipped out of my room. I didn’t spot anyone, so I hurried down the hall, keeping to the shadows, and made my way toward the dining hall.
I didn’t need to get terribly close to hear the conversation within. Over the past few days, I had honed my skills with the earrings, managing to tune out anything I didn’t want to hear while enhancing what I did.
“This meat is dry…”
Mother’s voice.
I slipped into an alcove, tucking myself behind a curtain, and made myself as small as possible–something I’d gotten good at as a child when I was hiding from Mother. I tuned out the sounds of the house and focused on Mother’s conversation.
For a long time, I heard nothing of note; just Mother complaining about the food, ordering more wine, scolding the servants for not doing what she wanted. Typical… Mother things.
And then I heard Alexander’s voice. He hadn’t spoken the entire time, leading me to wonder if he was even with her, but then I heard him murmur, “Helena, darling, can’t we invite Celeste to dinner? I’m getting worried-”
“You have nothing to worry about.” Mother’s voice was sharp, but there was an edge to it that made my spine go rigid. “All you have to worry about, Alexander, is finding that bitch, Natalia.”
Alexander sighed. “But we’re not even certain that she’s a traitor-”
“I told you, she’s an enemy spy. The sooner we attack Moonshadow, the better. We’ll keep her alive, of course, just long enough for questioning. But she can’t be trusted. You know this.”
I blinked as I processed what she’d just said. Mother not only knew Natalia was alive, but somehow convinced Alexander to attack her pack? Alexander thought his own daughter was a traitor?
It didn’t make any sense. Alexander loved Natalia from the moment he met her. He stood up for her against me and Mother. The man I knew would never do something to hurt her.
But to my surprise, Alexander sighed and said in a monotone voice, “You’re right, darling…”
“Good. Now eat your dinner.”
“Yes, darling…”
My interest was even more piqued now. I knew that David would have to hear about this; and Natalia needed to

be warned. If Bloodmoon was truly planning on launching an attack against Moonshadow, then the situation was even worse than I initially thought. Mother must have decided to retaliate for Natalia’s escape. Perhaps Father had given her new orders.
I heard the sounds of dinner finishing up then, and knew my time was running short. Quickly and quietly, I hurried back to my room, where David was supposed to be waiting for me.
And he was.
But… not like I expected.
