Andrei’s POV

Helena didn’t flinch. Her eyes flicked to the rubyencrusted sword in my hand, but her face betrayed no emotion.

So you’ve come to kill me,she said slowly, calmly. She cocked her head to one side. Pity. I never intended to kill you.

No?I tightened my grip around the scimitar, feeling the ruby pulse beneath my palm. It was warm, like it had been sitting in the sun. Knowing you, you probably intend to keep me alive, then. Suffering.

Helena snorted. You don’t know me at all, Alpha. We’ve only met a handful of times.

Yes, well, your reputation precedes you.

Helena just looked amused, red lips curving further. I took a step forward and raised the scimitar, willing it out of my palm just like the Bloodmoon warrior had before.

But before it could move, the sound of shuffling footsteps caught my attention. I whipped my head around just in time for something solid and furry to slam into my side, knocking the wind from my lungs and the sword from my hand and sending me sprawling across the floor.

Six figures emerged from the shadows, one in wolf form, stalking toward me like hunters on the prowl. The one that had slammed into me, the wolf, lowered its head and curled its lip back in a snarl. Razor sharp fangs dripped with saliva, and around its neck pulsed a single red gem.

Helena remained sitting. Watching. Sipping wine from a cup like this was fucking entertainment to her.

I didn’t wait for the figures to reach me. I was still too weak to run, far too weak to shiftso I held my hand out and called to the scimitar, willing it into my grip.

At first, it didn’t move. I’d never used one beforebut I recalled Natalia’s look of concentration when she used hers, recalled the way she shut her eyes and seemed to commune with her knife on a deeper level, as ifsurrendering herself to it.

I shut my eyes and let go.

A moment later, something warm and solid settled in my hand. The scimitar.

Kill it,I whispered, as if the scimitar could hear me. And, as if in response, the sword sprang forward. All that followed was the visceral sound of a wolf’s final gasp and the slice of metal through flesh.

While the scimitar sang through the air, I jumped to my feet, staggering against a nearby table. My wound was bleeding again, warmth seeping through the bandage. But I didn’t falter. I held my hand out and caught the scimitar as it arced back toward me.

Interesting, isn’t it?Helena sighed. The rubies, theyfeel starved half the time. The only time they feel sated is with blood.

They’re demonic,I snarled.

Some would argue that demons are the most useful things in the universe,Helena retorted.

I didn’t look at her. I couldn’t. Another dark figure rushed forward, sword raised. The red glow of its ruby pulsed, but he didn’t reach me. I willed the scimitar to slice through his belly. On its way back to me, it slammed into the back of the head of another male, sending him sprawling and twitching.

Three more. I could handle three.

And what is the use of the rubies to you?I asked as another figure charged me. I managed to sidestep the sing of her arrow, but it whipped back around, homing in on me. I just barely ducked beneath another table as the arrow slammed into the wood. Behind me, I heard the sound of my scimitar slipping in between her ribs.

There are so many uses.Helena leaned back in her chair as I dispatched another warrior. This one was another female wearing a chestplate encrusted with a single, glowing ruby. My scimitar twanged against the metal and careened back toward me, and in my moment of disorientation, she lunged.

I ducked and grabbed her standing leg, slamming her to the floor. This time, the scimitar wasn’t necessary. I ripped the dagger out of the belt across my chest and shoved it into her neck.
