“No.” I looked up at him through my lashes. “I mean it. At dinner, when you told me about your vision… I didn’t fully understand. But now…” I glanced back at the soldiers. “Now I see what you’re building. What we could build together.”
He grabbed my waist and pulled me closer. “You’ve changed your tune awfully quick.”
“I was scared before.” I pressed against him, feeling sick at the contact, but I forced myself to stay there. “Of the unknown. Of what it would mean. But seeing all of this…” I trailed my fingers down his chest. “I want to be part of it. Part of you.”
His breathing quickened. “Natalia—”
I kissed him before he could finish. It was hard and desperate. I poured everything I had into making it convincing. Making him believe that I wanted this. Wanted him. That I didn’t want to vomit into his mouth.
He responded immediately, his hands tightening on my waist, then sliding lower. He backed me up against one of the glass cases. The cold surface pressed against my spine. Inside the case, I could feel the soldier’s eyes on us. Watching. Unseeing, perhaps, but still watching.
The King’s mouth moved to my neck. His hands moved like they owned me, pulling at my dress, pushing up the fabric. I felt bile rise in my throat but swallowed it down and tangled my fingers in his hair, forcing a soft moan
out.
But when his hand slid between my thighs, I pulled his head back.
“Wait,” I gasped. “Wait.”
“What? Why?”
“We should…” I forced myself to meet his eyes. “We should be married first. Properly.”
He blinked. “Married?”
“Yes.” I gently pushed at his chest. “I want this. I want you. But I want to do it right. As your wife. Your queen.” I touched his face with one hand, making myself smile. “Don’t you want that too? A proper ceremony? To claim me in front of everyone?”
He stared at me for a long moment. I held my breath, praying he’d buy it. Meanwhile, my free hand was slipping into my pocket, fingers finding the explosive ruby.
I could do it now. I could end him and all of his creations.
But I would be ending myself, too. And my unborn baby.
My fingers slackened.
Finally, he smiled. “You’re right. Of course you’re right.” He straightened his clothes. “A wedding. Posthaste.”
“How soon?” My stomach dropped.
“As soon as I can get the priest and you can put on a white dress.” He cupped my face. “I’ve already waited long enough for you. Why wait any longer?”

My fingers tightened around the ruby again. I wanted to do it. Wanted to do this. Wanted to end all of it, but… I couldn’t.
“That… That sounds perfect.” The words felt like glass shards scraping at the inside of my mouth. I released the ruby and slipped my hand out of my pocket.
“But there is one thing.” He released me and stepped back. “You must return to your chambers. An army has been spotted ascending the mountain.”
My blood went cold. “An… army?”
“You needn’t worry, my love. You’ll be kept under guard-several of my best. You will be safe in your chambers, as will the children. The battle will be over quickly.”
“Of course.” I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. But I said the words anyway. “Th… Thank you.”
He led me from the room with his arm around my waist. Every step away from those soldiers felt like a nail in my coffin. I’d been so close. So fucking close.
And now I was being locked away while he prepared for the battle he wasn’t supposed to be capable of fighting.
Guards materialized as we walked. Four of them, all armed. They fell into step behind us.
“These men will ensure you are protected,” the King said. “That you’re kept safe until the ceremony.”
Safe. Right. More like imprisoned.
We reached my suite too quickly. The King kissed me again at the door, long and possessive, his tongue like a snake in my mouth. “Get ready, my love. In just a few hours, you will be my wife. My queen. And we’ll begin our empire together.”
I smiled. Nodded. Stepped inside.
The door closed behind me.
Once I was alone, I rushed over to the window and looked out at the snowy mountainside. The snow had cleared somewhat, and I could see dark shapes moving along the mountainside. The army was out there. Andrei was out there. In just ten minutes, they would storm the palace, believing that the Winter King’s dread army had been destroyed when it hadn’t.
Three hundred and forty-seven perfect warriors would be waiting for them, and I had no way to warn them.
