Chapter 417

Andrei’s POV

It took hours to reach a point on the mountain where I could mindlink my Beta again.

I had to pick my way down the mountain carefully, avoiding new snowdrifts and patches of ice that rendered the path I’d taken up unusable already. By the time I managed to reach an outcrop of rocks about halfway down the mountain and felt the strange bubble of… whatever it had been keeping me from contacting Natalia suddenly pop, the sun was already beginning to rise.

Not that it mattered, of course. The snow rendered everything a constant pale white. It was still early, not even close to dawn, but this high up, I could see dawn breaking on the distant horizon. The sun’s light was a welcome reprieve from the bitter darkness, but it was distant and cold, as if even its golden rays feared touching the peak in which the so-called “Winter King” resided.

“Hello?” I called out to my Beta, huddling against a couple of large boulders to keep the wind from filleting my skin clean off even through the thick wool layer beneath the guard’s armor.

“Alpha.” I let out a break of relief when my Beta’s voice came through. “You’re alive. Is everything alright?”

“I found Natalia and the twins. They’re alive.”

Relief flooded through the bond from my Beta’s end. “Thank the Goddess. And Alpha Damon-”

“Also alive. For now.” I suppressed a shudder at the thought of him in the situation Natalia had described. My brother, having his life force drained so an imposter could wear his face… It made me sick. “We need to move. Now. How far out is the army?”

“We started moving an hour ago,” my Beta replied. I peered over the edge of the cliff, but I couldn’t see anything through the whiteout conditions. “Left some behind to keep camp. The rest have begun marching.”

“Good. Keep going. I’ll meet you partway.”

“Understood.”

With that, I cut the connection and kept moving, shifting back into wolf form. By now, the pain in my ribs had turned into a dull ache and made every movement a labor, but I had to keep moving. I dug my claws into the ice and continued my descent, my eyes and nose stinging from the icy wind.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I saw dim torchlight flickering through the clouds below. The mist parted briefly, just enough for me to see a trail of black figures moving through the mountain pass.

The army. They were still far, so far they looked like ants from here, but I could see them moving steadily toward me. I picked up my pace, but remained careful-the last thing I needed was to fall and die. I couldn’t help Natalia, the twins, or my brother then.

When we finally reached each other, I shifted back and jogged down the rest of the way to meet them. Grace spotted me first. She broke away from the front of the column and rushed over, grabbing my arms and looking me over with a medicinal eye.

“You’re hurt.”

“I’m fine,” I said, pulling away with a wry grin. “Just a scuffle. You should see the other guy.”

Grace’s eyes hardened. “Well?”

“Natalia and the twins are alive. Damon is… He’s alive. But Natalia said that rogue fucker is holding him in a cell surrounded by rubies that are draining his life force so he can wear Damon’s appearance like a fucking mask.”

She almost seemed to stagger backwards at that, but steadied herself. “We’ll save him.”

I nodded curtly, then turned to my Beta, who was breathless and pale as he jogged up to us. His uniform had a thick layer of snow and frost on it and even his eyelashes, his eyes being the only part of his face that was exposed beneath his balaclava, were white with ice.

“Once we breach the palace,” I said, “send a team to the cells immediately. Tell them to look for a corridor lined with rubies. They can’t miss it. Break Damon out and get him to safety.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“And send another team to the east wing, third floor. There’s a suite with double doors; that’s where Natalia and the twins are. I want a full guard posted outside that room. No one gets past them. No one. They’re to guard that room with their lives.”
