Chapter 420

“Don’t make this harder than it needs to be, Your Majesty,” one of them said.

“I am not your queen.”

I lunged at the first guard. He raised his sword, but I ducked under his swing and slashed at his leg. The blade caught him just above the knee. While the poison began to spread, I focused on the fourth guard.

He was smarter than the others. He didn’t rush at me; just circled me slowly, sword held steady in his hands, waiting for an opening.

When he finally lunged, I sidestepped. But I wasn’t quite fast enough. The ruby in his sword flashed, and he moved with an efficiency that caught me off guard. His blade caught my arm, slicing straight through the fabric of my gown and my skin. The pain was hot and sharp, but I hissed through it and swung the dagger in a wide arc.

He jumped back, then came at me again.

I feinted left, then went right. The dagger found his throat, slashing a wide smile right across his jugular. He made a wet, choking sound and dropped his sword, hands coming up to stop the blood that spurted through his fingers. It was useless. Even if the wound wouldn’t kill him, the poison would.

After that, I moved quickly. One of the guards was smaller, so I ripped off his armor and put it on. It was still big on me, but the chainmail would protect me well enough. I then took the other guards’ chainmail shirts and slipped the twins into them; they nearly drowned in the metal with their small forms, but it was better than nothing at all.

Then, I carefully moved the twins to a safer location. I didn’t want them to wake up amongst the bodies in the closet, so I moved the servant and the original guard. It took some effort, but I laid them finally on the carpet and then placed the twins in the back of the closet, concealed by hanging clothes and a few boxes.

I pressed kisses to their foreheads and lingered briefly, touching their little faces. “Mommy will be right back, my loves,” I whispered.

And then I was gone, throwing the servant’s dark cloak over the top of my chainmail.

The palace was chaos. Guards running past, shouting orders. The clash of steel echoing from below. No one paid attention to the lone servant limping in dark robes.

By now, the door to the cells was unguarded. Everyone was too busy fighting to worry about prisoners. I slipped through and hurried down the stone steps; Damon’s cell was at the end. I ran toward it, shucking off my cloak in the process.

He was still there, slumped against the wall and barely conscious. But when he heard me approaching, his eyes cracked open.

“Natalia. You shouldn’t… be here.”

“Shut up.” I looked at the rubies embedded around his cell. There had to be at least twenty of them. I’d have to work quickly.

I lifted my shoe and smashed the first that was lining the floor around his cell. It crunched under my heel with a satisfying sound. Then the next, and the next. With each one I smashed, the light in the cell dimmed. But

With the rubies on the floor smashed, I got to work on the ones embedded in the bars. I used my dagger to smash those, slamming the hilt with the back of my hand so the blade cracked them.

I was about halfway through when I heard a sound behind me.

Damon’s eyes widened as he looked over my shoulder. “Natalia-”

But it was too late.

Before I could turn, something cracked across the back of my skull, and everything went dark.
