The sound of the battle echoed through the palace walls. Shouts. The clashing of metal. Howls. Screams.

Andrei was out there somewhere, fighting, possibly even dead. I hadn’t been able to accomplish our goal, and I hadn’t been able to warn him about the Winter King’s army. He was right; when I tried to reach for the bond we shared so I could mindlink him, all I felt was a muffled cloud of fog in my mind. As if it were surrounding everything, shrouding the connection we shared until it was too distant to even sense.

There must have been some kind of magic in the walls. Rubies, perhaps. Something to keep the Winter King’s prisoners and perhaps even his followers-from communicating with one another.

Control of information. One of the most common cult tactics.

I pressed my hands against the cold windowsill, ignoring the way the ice bit at my palms, and peered out into the snowy mountainside. The whiteout conditions had cleared somewhat, bright rays of sun filtering through the haze. But I still couldn’t see much.

I could hear it, though. The entire palace seemed to tremble with the force of the battle.

I looked over at the twins, who were still sleeping soundly on the bed behind me. I bit my lip. Even if I somehow managed to get out of my room, what would I do then? I couldn’t leave them here, alone and defenseless in the middle of a battle. But I also couldn’t stay. I couldn’t sit here and do nothing while Andrei was potentially losing a battle that he never could have won to begin with.

My hand moved to my pocket, where the explosive ruby was still there. Warm. Waiting. Hungry.

The dagger Andrei had given me was beside it.

Maybe I could do something. But what?

I thought for a long time, pacing my room. I couldn’t throw the explosive ruby into the fray; it could kill our own people. There had to be another way. Some way to lure the Winter King away from his army and end him once

and for all.

Suddenly, it hit me: Damon.

If I could free him, then the Winter King’s disguise would be ruined. He would be distracted and angry, and might leave the battle to find out what had happened.

It felt like a fool’s errand, but it was better than nothing. Better than waiting in this room like a sitting duck while the Winter King slaughtered my mate and returned to take me as his wife.

I slipped the dagger out of my pocket and up my sleeve, then rushed over to the door. There were four of them, but I’d faced worse. I knocked, and at first, there was no response. I knocked again and called out, “I need help! Something is wrong with my son!”

There was another silence, and then: “What is it?”

“He’s choking. I… I think he started to wake up and choked on his tongue. Please, I need help!”

I could hear their low voices as they talked amongst themselves, but then the lock clicked and the door swung open. I slipped behind the door just before two guards stepped inside, their hands already moving to their weapons. They froze, looking around for where I’d gone.

I lunged before they could react, driving the dagger up into the first guard’s throat. The ruby flared hot against my palm, and that foul-smelling poison leaked out. He made a strangled sound and went down, clawing at his neck as the poison spread.

The second guard was faster, but not fast enough. I stabbed him in the gut. Once. Twice. The ruby burned hotter with each strike. I could tell the poison had begun to work when he collapsed and vomited.

The other two guards were coming through the door then. I backed up, holding the dagger in front of me. Their eyes widened when they saw their comrades twitching and convulsing on the floor, but they didn’t hesitate.
