Chapter 424
Finally, his shoulders sagged a little. “I could give you everything, Natalia.”
“I don’t want everything. I want my mate and my children.”
“You can’t have Andrei. Well, you can have his face-” He gestured to himself. “But nothing more. He’s in the cells as we speak, being drained-”
I didn’t let him finish. Wrenching my wrist free from his grip, I raised the dagger, the point digging against the
underside of his chin.
But he caught me again with ease. Far too much ease; he moved like a blur. One moment his hand was at his side, and the next it was wrapped around my fingers so tight I felt one of my bones crunch as a ruby ring flashed around his finger.
Fuck.
I cried out, dropping the knife, but I didn’t stop. I drove my knee up, hard and fast, aiming between his legs as my fingers wrapped around the explosive ruby in my other pocket. But he twisted, and my knee hit his thigh instead. He yanked me forward, throwing me off balance, then shoved me backward.
I flew across the room, hitting the floor hard enough to knock the air from my lungs. Pain exploded through my shoulder and hip that hit the ground. I tried to scramble to my feet, but he moved in a flash and was suddenly there, standing over me.
“I really wouldn’t do that, my love.” He crouched down, sneering at me with Andrei’s face. “You’re going to behave now, Natalia. Or there will be consequences.”
“Fuck you.” I spat on him, but he didn’t even flinch. He merely wiped it away with the back of his hand like it was nothing.
“Fine. If that’s how you want to be, then I guess we’ll both have to be monsters.”
He stood and walked to the far side of the room, where a large, rectangular shape was covered by a heavy drape. He shot me one last sneer over his shoulder before he reached up and gripped the drape in one hand.
Then, with a single pull, he sent the curtain cascading to the floor.
I felt sick.
“You fucker!” I shouted, scrambling to my feet. My head spun from my injury, making me stumble into a nearby case. The soldier inside blinked at me. “Get my children out of that case! NOW!”
“No. I don’t think I will.” The Winter King didn’t even flinch when I charged at him. Another ruby ring flashed, and he caught me by the throat. My airway constricted as my feet lifted from the floor. I scrabbled at his arm, scratching the skin with my nails until it bled, but it was no use. He was too strong.
As he lifted me, I looked past him, over his shoulder and into the case behind him.
There, bundled up and laying on the floor, were the twins.
Still sleeping. And completely at the Winter King’s mercy.

“They’re unharmed,” he said calmly, lowering me just as my vision began to darken at the edges. When he released me, I collapsed, clutching at my throat and coughing. “I wouldn’t hurt such perfect specimens, you know.”
“You’re a fucking monster. I hope you die in agony, you sick fuck. And if you hurt them, I’ll—”
“I just said I wouldn’t.” He glanced at the case, briefly dragging his fingertips over the glass as if stroking it, then crouched down to my level and dipped his head so his face-Andrei’s face-filled my vision.
“In fact,” he said slowly, “if you cooperate, I won’t even age them with my rubies. They can grow up just the way you wanted. Only our future children will take part in the ceremonies.”
I swallowed hard. I wanted to rip his throat out with my teeth, but I forced myself to remain calm. To think. To plan. He didn’t know about the explosive ruby. But I couldn’t blow my children up. I needed to be practical, especially with Andrei still alive and in trouble.
“And what, pray tell, do you ask of me?” I hissed.
The Winter King’s lips curved. He reached out to touch my veil. I resisted the urge to bite him.
Just then, the doors behind us swung open. I whipped my head around to see a male in what looked like priest’s robes striding toward us, flanked by two of the crippled servants and holding a large book.
“Become my wife,” the King said softly. “Take part in the ceremony that will make us one-that will make you mine.”
I lifted my chin. “And if I refuse?”
The Winter King smirked with Andrei’s mouth and reached into his pocket, holding out the ruby from before— the one that would age my children too quickly.
“Then I’ll age them,” he said. “And I’ll make sure they grow up broken, just like the others.”
