Chapter 425
Chapter 425
Damon’s POV
+25 Bonus
The guard dragged me through the snow by my collar. I had given up walking a while ago, and he hadn’t bothered helping me stay on my feet. Hell, I could barely even lift my head. My body felt like a wet noodle.
The rubies had drained everything. My strength. My wolf. My will to fight.
All of it was fucking gone.
“Don’t know why his Highness wouldn’t let me just kill you in the cells,” the guard muttered, shaking his head. He was young, maybe in his mid-twenties, and he was one of the real ones-not one of those abominations that the King kept in those glass boxes. “Would’ve saved me the trip, but he’s too theatrical.”
We were outside now. The wind bit at my exposed skin, but I was too far gone to really feel it at this point. I’d gone completely numb when the guard dragged me past all those bodies in the entry hall. Our warriors.
I didn’t see Grace among them, but I knew she’d be too stubborn to stay behind while everyone else went off to battle.
I just hoped she died quickly and cleanly, and that these freaks didn’t mess with her body.
Finally, we reached the edge of a cliff. I could hear the wind howling below, could feel the emptiness of the drop without even having to look. The guard let go of my collar and took a step back, planting his boot against my side.
I closed my eyes. This was it, then. After everything I’d survived, I was going to die on a frozen mountaintop, thrown away like garbage.
I just hoped that Andrei and Natalia made it out with the twins. Goddess, how I hoped.
The guard’s boot pressed harder against my ribs, and I started to slide. The edge was right there. Another inch and I would be gone.
But the drop never came.
The pressure on my ribs disappeared.
I heard a thud, and my eyes shot open to see the guard standing there, eyes wide and lifeless.
“Fuck. You,” a familiar voice growled. Slender hands, hands that had always healed instead of harmed, pushed the guard’s body over the cliff. He fell into the white abyss with a hatchet sticking out of the back of his skull.
Not a ruby hatchet. Just good, old fashioned sharp metal.
“Damon.” Grace dropped to her knees, hands checking me for injuries. I caught her fingers and pressed kisses to them, especially to the ring she wore, but she shook me off and kept inspecting me with a clinical eye.
“Grace,” I whispered. “You’re alive. What are you doing here? You need to get out-”
“No.” She stood and grabbed my hands, grunting as she hauled me to my feet like a sack of potatoes. “We’re not done here yet. I’ll scold you plenty later for going missing on me, but for now, we have to save Andrei and Natalia.”

My throat tightened. I leaned heavily against Grace. “Darling, I’m not really fit to-
“I don’t give a shit.” Her eyes flashed with that fire I knew so well, and suddenly, she stuffed something into my mouth that tasted like shit. “Swallow it. Don’t cough it up. It’ll give you strength.”
I forced my jaws to chew the strange, grainy mixture, then swallowed it. A few moments later, I felt some of my strength return. Not much, but enough to help me stay upright.
We moved slowly, painfully. Every step felt like miles. My vision kept blurring, but as the herbs did their work, I felt a little more capable. By the time we reached a side door, I was standing on my own two feet.
“-wearing his face now,” Grace was saying through the haze that clouded my mind. “That thing is… It doesn’t matter. We have to get back to the cells. We have to free him. Together, we might be able to take the asshole down and save Natalia.”
