The servant’s face fell. “Oh…”
I stood. “Where are my children?”
“Come! Come!” Eyes lighting up, the servant gripped my hand with his gnarled one and led me out of the throne room. He led me back to the room that had all of those abominations in it; I reached for the scimitar at my hip, but when we entered, the room was quiet and most of the cases were empty.
Those that weren’t no longer had living tenants inside.
And there, at the end of the room, was a half–shattered case with two sleeping little bundles in it. Two servants sat on either side of them, holding bloodied knives.
I rushed over, dropping to my knees. The children were unharmed, thank the Goddess. I looked at the servants, who stood and nodded to me, then limped away.
“We… protect,” the male said. “Mother… Ask… We help…” He gestured around. “We… plan… Long time… Wait for … Mother. Chosen one… To kill King… Then… We revolt.”
“You think Natalia is–was…” My throat bobbed.
He pressed his hand to his chest. “We know.”
I looked away again. They saw Natalia as some kind of savior, some kind of chosen one—Mother. They’d been waiting for her, perhaps on some kind of prophecy. She was supposed to kill their so–called “King” so they could fight back against the others.
Too bad their fucking prophecy didn’t warn them of her impending death.
Just then, the twins began to stir. Jane blinked her eyes open, yawning, and furrowed her brow. “Daddy…?”
“You’re awake.” I clutched them both close, breathing in their sweet, familiar scents. They were awake. Alive. At least one good thing had come out of this; but we still needed to get back down the mountain safely.
“Where’s Mommy?” Max asked.
I froze. The words wouldn’t come.
How could I tell my children that their mother had plummeted to her death?
Natalia’s POV
I braced myself for the hard, final impact of icy ground and jagged rocks, but it never came. Just before we hit the ground, something buoyed us upward as if we were attached to some kind of parachute. Then, we gently lowered into the snow as if laid down by the invisible hand of a goddess.
I lost consciousness after that.
When I woke, I was no longer blinded by the snow and the light of the full moon. Rather, I was someplace dark and dank, the sound of dripping water echoing off dark stone walls. I lifted my head from the shoulder it was resting on and found myself supported on the King’s back.
We must have been in some kind of tunnel; somewhere in the mountain.
This was my chance. Snarling low in my throat, I extended my fangs and sank my teeth into his shoulder.
“Agh!” He cried out and dropped me. The wind knocked from my lungs as I fell against hard stone, but I didn’t

hesitate. I scrambled to my feet and tried to make a run for it.
But my skirt was heavy with cold water from the snow, and the cave was dark and uneven. I tripped forward before I made it far. My hands scraped against the rough, jagged rocks, drawing blood with a stinging pain.
I tried to crawl then, but the King caught me easily. Rubies flashing, he hoisted me onto his back again like I was no more than a sack of potatoes and continued walking.
“ANDREI!” I shouted. My voice echoed deafeningly off the walls of the cave.
“He won’t hear you, my love.”
“He’ll hear our mindlink.” I squeezed my eyes shut and reached deep for our mate bond. But it was dulled. Muted, just as it had been in the palace.
The King chortled, and the sound was like iron raking across coals. Gravelly and nerve–wracking.
“He won’t hear that, either. This mountain is embedded with rubies to its very core, all enchanted to dull every mindlink except for my own. Good luck contacting anyone, let alone your mate.”
I snarled again. “Where are you taking me?”
“Deeper into the mountain, my love; where we can start anew.”
“Like hell I’m going any further with you.” I opened my mouth to bite him once more, but a ruby flashed, briefly illuminating the case, and darkness took me within its grasp.
