When I woke again, the air had grown colder. All light had seemingly long since been blotted out by the thick walls of the mountain; it was pitch dark, save for the ruby that occasionally pulsed around the King’s finger, illuminating the walls.
If it had been under different circumstances, I might have said that the caves were actually quite fascinating and beautiful.
The hard, smooth walls indicated that the tunnels must have been created by flowing magma during some ancient volcanic eruption, and the lichen coating the stones almost seemed to glitter whenever the King’s ruby pulsed. Stalactites dripped with sweet–smelling water, and all was quiet and calm.
But I was anything but calm. The moment I woke, I tried to bite him again. This time, I didn’t succeed; the King, expecting me to fight back by now, had tied my wrists and ankles while I’d slept and immediately overpowered
I felt a punch land across my skull that sent lights dancing across my vision, although I retained consciousness. While I was recovering from the blow, he calmly hoisted me back onto his shoulder and continued to carry me through the tunnels.
“You’re fucking crippled,” I pointed out, making no effort to mince my words–not when it came to him, at least. If I couldn’t hurt him physically, then I would slice him with my vile language, even if it didn’t make a damn difference. “How is it possible that you’re carrying me like this?”
“Whenever you have a question like that, the answer is always red and small and very beautiful.” His voice echoed through the tunnel like nails on a chalkboard. He held up his free hand. Ruby rings glittered on each finger, some even sporting multiple. “They’re nifty little things, aren’t they?”
“I heard they were forged in Hell.”
The King snorted. “I dare say they came from Heaven.”
I rolled my eyes, but gave up talking after that. My throat was raw, and with the King’s shoulder pressing into my abdomen, every word, every breath, was an effort.
He carried me like that for what felt like hours. We never stopped for water, never stopped to rest. The feeling of his bones jutting into me became unbearable to the point of making me vomit once, but he didn’t even stop for
that.
I wanted to fight back. I really did. But the deeper and further we went, the weaker I became. Maybe it was the rubies in the walls, or the stale air, or simply exhaustion, starvation, and dehydration.
It didn’t matter. I couldn’t stand up to him. I couldn’t stand up at all.
At some point, I swore I heard voices calling to me; Andrei’s. Jane’s. Max’s. Grace’s and Damon’s.
But I knew it wasn’t real. The tunnels were dark and empty. I was hearing things; machinations of my own mind, hopes that would never come. It was better to blot the sounds out and pretend I hadn’t heard them at all.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the cave opened It widened and widened for about half a mile, and then, finally, it expanded into an enormous cavern that I had to crane my neck to take it.
Of course, I couldn’t see much; it was too dark. But as the King carried me forward, I realized that the stones had grown even smoother and darker. Bricks formed, then doors, then impossible structures.
This wasn’t a cavern. This was a palace. A second one hidden beneath the mountain.

The King led me into a lavishly–decorated room, where he laid my bound body onto a surprisingly comfortable chaise. I tried to wriggle away while he was lighting a fire, but I was tied too tightly, too exhausted, and too disoriented to get far.
I gave up the moment I rolled off the chaise and landed on the floor with a thud.
Even when I tried to reach for my wolf, she wasn’t there; it was as if she had gone completely dormant again, just as she had been all those months ago.
