The fire lit up the room, revealing even more lavish decor than I expected. Everything had a fine layer of dust on it, but the place reeked of money; expensive portraits, plush furniture, marble sculptures.

Turning to me, the King clicked his tongue and placed me back on the couch. Then, he cut my bonds. I rubbed my sore wrists and sat up.

“What now?” I hissed. “This place is clearly empty, and you’re alone; do you not think that no one will come for me?”

“Why would they? They all think you’re dead.” He reached into his pocket and withdrew a small, oval–shaped ruby. “We’ll start fresh here, my love, where they won’t be able to hurt us anymore. Forget your old life; the mountain will make you reborn.”

Andrei’s POV

I couldn’t find her body anywhere.

I searched for hours. A full day had come and gone, and I found no trace of Natalia’s body. Not even a drop of blood.

The blizzard didn’t make it any easier. It had started when we had reached the halfway point down the mountain, forcing the army to stop and make camp there. I’d shifted and gone ahead on my own, scanning the mountainside for Natalia’s body, but the snow eventually buried all chances.

I would have to search again tomorrow, when the snow let up.

When I returned to camp, I found Grace waiting for me outside the medical tent. Her apron was covered in blood, and she had a haunted look to her eyes; but she wasn’t completely devastated or tearing the place to shreds, so I knew my brother was alive.

“He needs a transfusion,” she said. “He lost a lot of blood when we removed the arrow. You two share the same blood type?” I nodded, and she ushered me into the tent without asking permission.

Not that I would have said no, anyway. I had already lost Natalia; I couldn’t lose Damon, too.

Grace set me up in a chair by Damon’s cot. I couldn’t look for long at his sleeping form; it was too painful, too much of a reminder of Natalia’s final moments. She began to draw my blood, and for a while, I just sat there with my eyes closed, exhausted from my fruitless search.

I nodded and moved to stand. I only made it to the flap of the tent when my Beta suddenly poked his head in. ” There you are, Alpha. The twins…” He looked at me uncertainly. “They’re asking questions again.”

My chest tightened. Of course they were; I’d been too much of a coward to tell them what had happened to their mother. I’d told them to sleep instead, and that we would talk about it later.

Well, it was later. And the twins had already been sleeping for days. So I supposed I had no choice now but to see them and tell them the truth.
