Natalia’s POV

I was still laying in bed with my baby pressed to my chest when the King summoned me for dinner. I didn’t have a choice; even though my legs trembled and every sinew in my body burned when I moved, I had no option other than to obey.

After all, if I refused, what would he do to my child?

It took great effort to get out of bed. I didn’t bother changing out of my bloodsoaked dressI simply gathered my child to my chest and limped toward the dining room.

I had wrapped her in a scrap of my skirt that wasn’t terribly dirty. Everything else in this place was dusty and unhygienic. Thankfully, for now, she was sleeping peacefully.

I hadn’t named her yet. I was afraid to. I didn’t know if I would lose her all too quickly, and a name just felt like an opportunity for a grave marker. Besides, I didn’t want the King saying her namesullying it.

When I finally made it to the dining room, limping and exhausted, the King was already seated at the head of a long table. Torches flickered along the walls, casting dancing shadows across the dark stone. The table was set with more food than two people could ever eatroasted meats, fresh bread, fruits, wine.

It made me sick to look at. I didn’t even bother asking where he got all of that food.

Sit,he said, gesturing to the chair across from him.

I did, only because I didn’t have the strength to refuse. My legs were shaking so badly I was afraid I might fall if I stayed standing, and I couldn’t risk dropping my little girl.

The King watched me as I sank into the chair, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. You look pale, my love. You should eat.

Don’t call me that,I hissed.

Eat.

I picked up a piece of bread and forced myself to take a bite. It tasted like ash in my mouth, but I chewed and swallowed anyway. I needed my strength. I needed to recover so I could find a way out of here.

The King took a sip of wine and leaned back in his chair. You’re probably wondering about this palace, aren’t you?

I said nothing. I didn’t want to hear his story. I didn’t care. I just wanted to escape.

But he continued anyway.

I wasn’t always like this, you know. Once, I was part of a pack. A real pack, with a family and a home. His eyes grew distant. But my parents died when I was young. An ambush from a rival pack. I was left an orphan.

He paused, swirling the wine around in his glass.

No one helped me. Not a single soul. They all turned their backs and let me fend for myself. I was just a child, but they didn’t care. So I left. Became a rogue. His lips twisted into something bitter. I starved in the

wilderness for months. Nearly died more times than I can count.

I took another bite of bread, chewing slowly, My baby began to stir, but I gently bounced her, willing her to go back to sleep. I didn’t want her to see the fucking monster that was sitting across from us.

Eventually, a small pack of rogues took me in,he continued. They were outcasts too. Rejects. But they were strong, and they taught me how to survive. How to fight. How to take what I wanted instead of waiting for scraps.

He set down his glass and looked at me directly.

I grew up with them. Became their leader. Their chief. And during that time, I heard legendsstories passed down through generations about a very powerful female. One who would produce the most powerful pups the world had ever seen. His eyes gleamed. I knew it had to be you.

My stomach turned. I didn’t bother asking how he even knew I existed. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to know.

I had to have you,he said,so I schemed. Planned. It took years, but I finally managed to kidnap you.

I blinked, suddenly realizing what he was implying. You kidnapped Lilith,I breathed. Not me.

His smile faltered. Yes. That wasunfortunate. I realized my mistake too late. But by then, you had disappeared. When I finally found you again, you had taken a new name, and you were always so wellprotected. I couldn’t get close to you.
