He stood and began pacing around the table.

“So I waited. Watched. Followed you for years, looking for an opening. But you were never alone. Never vulnerable.” He stopped behind my chair, and I felt his cold fingers brush against my shoulder. I jerked away. Until now.”

“Get away from me,” I hissed.

He chuckled and returned to his seat. “During those years, I became aware of something. A treasure hidden deep within this mountain. I found the rubies by accident, really. I was exploring, looking for a place for my pack to live more permanently, and I stumbled upon the first cache.”

He held up his hand, showing off the rings on his fingers.

“I learned to forge them into weapons. Jewelry. Tools. My pack grew larger. More powerful. We started taking out other rogue packs in the region, absorbing them into our own. Soon, we were unstoppable.”

“And you became a monster,” I bit out.

Surprisingly, he didn’t seem bothered by the accusation. “The longer I used the rubies, the more I changed. My hair fell out. My bones twisted. My body became… this.” He gestured to himself with a bitter laugh. “But all the while, my power grew. And I realized I didn’t care anymore. I didn’t care what I looked like or what I had become. I only cared about one thing: more power.

“And then I discovered the aging rubies. The ones that could speed up time itself. That’s when I knew what I had to do. I could build an army unlike anything the world had ever seen. All I needed were the right mothers.”

My hands clenched into fists under the table.

“I took multiple wives. Forced them to bear my children over and over again, aging them into soldiers within days. My army grew. Three hundred and forty–seven perfect warriors, all bred and trained for one purpose: to

conquer.

He paused. “But none of them were powerful enough. Not really. They were strong, yes, but not strong enough to take over the world. Not like I wanted. I knew that, to create the army I truly needed, I had to have you. The most powerful female. The one from the legends.” He smiled.

“And now I do.”

My blood ran cold.

“That daughter you just gave birth to will be our first servant; we’ll need many, of course, and with the muddied blood of her father, she won’t make a good warrior. But you and I will have more. And they will become warriors. Together, we will rebuild my empire, one that will be even more powerful than the last. We will conquer every pack, every territory, every kingdom. And you will be by my side the entire time. My Queen.”

“I will never willingly give you another child. Never.”

“You don’t have a choice, my love.” He stood, crossing over to me again, then reached out and grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at him. His fingers were cold and rough. “You belong to me now. Your body, your womb, your future–all of it is mine.”

I jerked my head out of his grasp, resisting the urge to gag at his fetid breath, and stood. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it might burst out of my chest.

The King’s smile widened. “We’ll start tonight, of course.”

“What?” I breathed.

“You’ve had enough time to recover.” He gestured toward the door. “Go back to your room. Prepare yourself.” He wrinkled his nose at my sorry state. “Bathe. I’ll join you shortly.”

“No.” I shook my head. “No, I just gave birth. I can’t-”

“You can, and you will.” His voice was cold and brooked no argument. “Unless you’d prefer I take your daughter and age her right now. Is that what you want?”

I froze. My mind raced, searching for a way out, but I couldn’t find one. He had me trapped, cornered like a desperate little animal, and he knew it.

“Go,” he said again. “I won’t ask a third time.”

I stared at him for a long moment, hatred burning so hot in my chest I thought I might explode. But I couldn’t fight him. Not now. Not like this.

So I turned and walked out of the dining hall, my hands shaking, my mind screaming.

I had to find a way out of here before tonight.
