Natalia’s POV

The next morning, Jane dragged me out of the house before I even got a chance to finish my coffee. She couldn’t wait for our day out together. Neither could I. It had been a long time since I’d had a chance to do anything out of the house, and the weather was perfect. Warm and sunny, the air smelling of spring wildflowers, and the distant mountains on full display on the horizon.

The seamstress’s shop was a small building near the town square that had survived the war mostly intact. A bell chimed when we pushed open the door, and a woman looked up from behind the counter. She was young with a dark pixie cut, and wore a length of measuring tape draped around her neck.

Her eyes widened when she saw us standing there. “Luna Natalia! To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“My mommy needs a dress for the spring equinox party,” Jane announced before I could say anything. Something pretty.”

The seamstress smiled. “Well, you’ve come to the right place.” She gestured for me to follow her toward the back of the shop where bolts of fabric lined the walls. “What were you thinking? Something simple?

Formal?”

I ran my fingers over a bolt of deep blue fabric. “I don’t know. It’s been a while since I’ve had anything new made.”

“How long is ‘a while‘?” she asked.

“I… don’t even remember.” I laughed, but it came out a little more strained than I expected. “Before the war. Before… everything.”

The seamstress studied me for a moment, her expression softening. “I see. Well, it’s been hard on all of us, but every woman deserves a new dress once in a while.” She pulled out a few bolts and laid them across the counter. Emerald green. Deep crimson. Midnight blue. “These would all look good with your coloring.”

I studied the colors, all of which were beautiful, but none of them really spoke to me. The seamstress, noticing the disinterest on my face without me even having to say anything, nodded thoughtfully and scurried away.

“Wait right there!” she called over her shoulder as she disappeared into another room. “I think I’ve got just the right thing!”

Jane and I exchanged glances, but shrugged. A few moments later, the seamstress returned holding a new bolt of fabric. This one was a rich golden color that almost seemed to shimmer when it moved. “What about. this?” she asked, setting it down in front of me.

Jane gasped and tugged on my sleeve. “You have to get that one! It looks like the sunset.”

I touched the fabric. It was soft and smooth, almost like silk, but heavy and durable at the same time. “It’s

beautiful.”

“It’ll look good on you.” The seamstress set it aside and started pulling out sketches from a drawer. “Now, for the style. Do you want something modest? Or something that’ll make your mate remember why he mated you in the first place?”

My cheeks warmed. “What?”

She gave me a knowing look that made my throat bob.

“Word travels, huh?” I muttered.

She shrugged one shoulder. “It’s nothing to be ashamed of. But people can tell that the Alpha has been preoccupied lately.”

I looked away, suddenly feeling awful. Of course people noticed. Of course they were jumping to their own conclusions. I tried not to fault them for it, but it left a bitter feeling on my tongue.

“The second one,” I admitted quietly.

“Good choice.” She spread out several sketches on the counter. “Let’s find something that’ll knock him flat on his ass.”

Jane giggled behind her hand, even when I wagged my finger at her.

We spent the next hour going through designs. The seamstress suggested a fitted bodice with a low neckline and off–shoulder sleeves. The skirt would be full and flowing, with slits up the sides for moyement. And she wanted to add embroidery along the hem and neckline. Gold thread on gold fabric.
