“It’ll catch the firelight,” she explained. “Make you look like you’re glowing.”

“That sounds expensive.”

“Consider it a gift. For everything you and the Alpha did to end the war.” She started taking my measurements by wrapping the tape around my waist and bust. “Besides, I need the practice. I haven’t made anything this fancy in months.”

When she finished measuring, she wrote down the numbers and tucked them into a notebook. “Come back in a week for the first fitting. I’ll have the basic structure done by then.”

“A week? That’s fast.”

“I work fast when I’m inspired.” She smiled. “And trust me, I’m inspired. You’re going to look stunning.”

Jane grabbed my hand as we left the shop. “I told you! You’re going to be so pretty! Daddy’s going to love it!”

I squeezed her hand. “I hope so, princess.”

“He will,” she said firmly. “I know he will.”

We got back to the house around midday. I was planning to make lunch and maybe work on more preparations for the banquet, but the moment we stepped through the door, I knew something was wrong.

Max was sitting on the stairs with his arms wrapped around his knees. He looked up when he saw me, didn’t run to me like he normally did.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“It’s Daddy,” he said quietly. “He’s been in the training arena all morning. He won’t come out.”

My stomach dropped. “What do you mean he won’t come out?”

“His Beta tried to get him to stop for lunch. But he just ignored him.” Max looked down at his hands. “He’s acting weird again.”

I stood and looked around. “Where’s Hope?”

“With Grace. She came by earlier to check on everyone.

“Okay. Stay here with your sister.” I headed for the door, then stopped and turned back. “Actually, why don’t you two go help Grace with Hope? I’ll handle your father.”

Jane started to protest, but Max grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the stairs. He’d always been good at reading situations. Knew when to push and when to step back, like a little Alpha in the making.

I walked quickly toward the training arena. It was behind the main barracks, a large open space with weapons racks and training dummies scattered around. As I got closer, I could hear the sound of something hitting wood over and over.

Andrei’s Beta was standing outside the entrance with his arms crossed. When he saw me, he shook his head.

“I tried talking to him,” he said. “He won’t listen.”

“How long has he been in there?”

“Since dawn. Maybe earlier. I found him when I came for morning drills.”

Six hours. Maybe more. I pushed past the Beta and stepped into the arena.

Andrei was in the center, shirtless and covered in sweat. He was attacking one of the training dummies with his bare fists. He wasn’t wearing gloves or wraps, but it didn’t matter now. The damage had already been

done.

His knuckles were bloody. Split open from the repeated impact. Blood dripped down his fingers and splattered on the ground with each hit.

But he didn’t stop. Didn’t slow down. He just kept hitting the dummy over and over and over and…

I stood there watching him for a moment, hoping that he would notice me and stop hurting himself like
