And there, sitting on a bench, was Natalia.

She was talking to someone. A man. He was leaning close to her, smiling, and she was smiling back.

Something hot and violent surged through my chest. Jealousy. Rage. How dare he sit that close to her? How dare he make her smile when I couldn’t?

“Your second kill,” the voice whispered. “He will be the catalyst for what is to come next.”

“No.” I dug my heels into the dirt. But it was no use. Charred hands pushed me again, and I stumbled out of the treeline and toward the fire.

“Kill him. Rip out his throat. Make a spectacle of it.”

I was closer now. Close enough to hear their conversation. The man was asking if she was alright. She was telling him about me. About how distant I’d been. The rage intensified. She was talking to a stranger about our problems. About me.

My arm shot out and grabbed Natalia’s waist before I could stop myself. I pulled her up from the bench. Her protests fell on deaf ears; I could hardly hear her words over the rushing of that bloody tide. It was consuming me now, drowning me.

All I could see was him. His face. His smile. The way he’d been sitting so close to my mate.

“Get away from her,” I said. The words came out in a growl.

The male stood slowly with his hands raised. “Alpha, I meant no disrespect. I was just-”

“I said get away from her!”

I shoved Natalia aside and lunged at the man. My fist connected with his jaw, and he stumbled backward. It wasn’t enough. I lunged again.

He tried to defend himself, but I was faster. Stronger. I grabbed him by the throat and slammed him into the ground. His head cracked against the packed earth, and blood trickled from his nose.

“You think you can take what’s mine?” I snarled. “You think you can touch her?”

“I wasn’t–I didn’t-” he gasped, clawing at my hands.

“Kill him,” the voice commanded. “Squeeze until his neck breaks. Feel his life drain away. It’s such a delicious feeling. You’ll learn to love it after tonight. You’ll crave it, just as I do.”

My hands tightened. The man’s face was turning purple. His eyes were bulging and filled with terror. The voice was right–it was delicious. I could feel his pulse under my fingers. I could feel it getting weaker. Just a little more pressure and-

Suddenly, someone slammed into me from the side, knocking me off of the male. I hit the ground hard but rolled back to my feet, prepared to attack again.

I looked up to see Damon standing over the male’s gasping form with his fists clenched. “What the hell are you doing, Andrei?”

I didn’t answer; I just snarled and lunged at him too. Before I could reach him, his hand shot out and slapped me across the face so hard that my ears rang. I stumbled back and dropped to my knees in the dirt.

It was then that the world snapped back into focus.

The voice disappeared. The rage evaporated. I was suddenly horribly aware of what I’d just done.

Chapter 602

The male was on the ground, coughing and holding his throat. Blood covered his face. His neck was already bruising where my hands had been. Around us, the remaining festival–goers were staring. Watching. Some looked scared. Others looked disgusted.

And then there was Natalia.

She was standing a few feet away, her hand over her mouth tears streaming down her face. The golden dress that had made her look so beautiful was wrinkled and stained with grass and dirt.

Oh, Goddess, what had I done?

“Natalia-” I reached for her. I wanted her to understand that this wasn’t me. That I was… sick. Something had twisted itself inside of me.

But she was already turning away. She picked up her skirts and fled, and she didn’t stop until she was out of view. 2
