Natalia’s POV

I ran until my lungs burned and my legs nearly gave out. By the time I reached the house, I was gasping for air and my face was soaked with tears. I stumbled through the front door and up the stairs to our bedroom, where I slammed the door behind me and locked it.

Then, I collapsed facefirst onto the bed and sobbed.

I couldn’t get the image out of my head. Andrei’s hands around Isaac’s throat. The look in his eyes. That empty, murderous look. Like he wasn’t even there. Like something else had taken control of him.

He’d almost killed Isaac. He probably would have killed him if Damon hadn’t stopped him.

And it was all because Isaac had been sitting next to me. Talking to me. This man I hardly knew… He was just being friendly. And so what if he was flirting with me? Andrei didn’t have to kill him for it!

I wasn’t sure how long I was laying there like that, crying until my eyes hurt, but eventually, a knock came at the door. I stiffened, but it was Damon’s voice that came through the wood. “Natalia?”

“Go away,” I choked out.

“I’m coming in.” I heard the jangle of keys. A moment later the door opened and Damon stepped inside, closing it behind him. He crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed. “Are you okay?”

“Do I look okay?”

“No.” He was quiet for a moment. “I’m sorry. About what happened. About Andrei.”

“What’s wrong with him?” I sat up and wiped at my face. “Why did he do that? That wasn’t like him at all.”

“Do you want the honest answer, or the less painful one?” he asked. I just gave him a withering glare, and he sighed, hesitating for a long moment before he gathered his thoughts. “He told me he’s been having… visions. Really bad ones. They started after you got back from the mountain.”

“Visions?”

“Violent ones. He sees himself hurting people. Killing them. You, the kids, the whole pack.” Damon looked at me. “He told me about them a few days ago. Made me promise not to tell you.”

My stomach dropped. “And you didn’t think I should know?”

“I wanted to tell you. But he’s my brother, and he asked me not to.” Damon’s jaw tightened. “I thought he would get help. I didn’t think it would get this bad.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?” I whispered. I was asking myself more than Damon.

“He probably thinks that if he tells you how bad it is, you’ll leave him. Or worse, that he’ll come across as…‘

“Insane,” I whispered. Damon nodded. I thought about the journal. The red ink. The ramblings about blood and murder. That wasn’t a prank, was it? It was him. He had written those notes, maybe while he was lost in the midst of a vision.

“What do we do?” I whispered.

Damon turned to face me. “I don’t know. But Natalia, I need you to understand something. Andrei might be dangerous right now. Not because he wants to be, but because he can’t control what’s happening to him. I think you should come back to Ashmoor with us tonight. With the kids.”

The words hit me like a slap to the face. Dangerous. My husband. The man I loved. The father of my children.

Dangerous.

Before I could respond, the door opened again. Andrei stood in the doorway, and the sight of him made my heart clench. He looked awful. Pale and hollow–eyed, like he hadn’t slept in weeks.

“Can I talk to you?” he asked quietly. “Alone?”

Damon looked at me, and I nodded. He left without a word, squeezing Andrei’s shoulder as he passed.

Andrei closed the door and stood there for a moment, staring at the floor. “I’m sorry.”

“Damon told me everything,” I said.

His jaw feathered, and he ran a hand through his hair. His knuckles were bloody, and when he spoke, his voice cracked. “I can’t control it anymore, Natalia. The visions are getting worse. They feel real. And when I’m in them, I can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not.”
