He remembered Briony had recently bought a Land Rover, though Crystal was usually the one driving it.
"Where are the rescue crews?"
"Yeah, there's someone in that car! I thought I heard a woman calling for help just a minute ago."
Stewart’s heart sank. He quickly pulled out his phone and dialed Briony's number, but the call wouldn't go through.
His nerves stretched taut, he tried calling Xenia Cooper. This time, she answered almost immediately.
"Where's Briony?" he demanded.
"Didn't she head down the mountain ages ago?" Xenia's voice was laced with disdain. "Relax, Stewart, I didn't touch a hair on your precious darling's head. I even gave her our agreement. Thanks for your hard work these past few weeks, but I'm unilaterally ending our partnership. You haven't broken the contract. You can go back to your Briony now."
Stewart had no time for agreements. He just needed to know Briony was safe.
"When did she leave?"
"About ten minutes ago. Don't tell me you're on your way here?"
"I'm on the road up. There's been a landslide, and I can't reach her!"
"A landslide?" Xenia said. "Wow, she can't be that unlucky, can she?"
"Xenia Cooper, tell me, what kind of car was she in today?"
"A Land Rover. That girl, Crystal, was with her."
A Land Rover...

He had just snatched her back from the jaws of death. Xenia had finally agreed to let him go... Why? Why now, of all times?
"Bryn, you have to hold on! I'll get you out, I swear I'll get you out!"

The night was dark, but in that moment, she could see the pain etched on his face with perfect clarity. Rain hammered against the car, and the windshield wipers swished frantically back and forth.
Xenia Cooper, holding the steering wheel, glanced over at her. "Briony, you should burn this image of him into your memory."
Briony’s eyelashes trembled.
